In Lin Yutang’s autobiographical novel "Lai Boying", the main character says: "If you were born in the mountains, they would shape your perspectives. It seems that the mountains infuse your blood... The power of the mountains is so immense that it’s irresistible.”The natural environment of one’s hometown has a lifelong impact on their worldview. Ever since he returned to Yunnan from Beijing and settled down there in 2020, Mr. Li Youjie has developed a different perception of mountains. According to Li, "I have since become more sensitive to the mountainous landscape. When I see some mountains, I feel like I could almost see their souls. Then after trekking through them, I am convinced that mountains are alive. It seems to echo common expressions used by elderly locals of those areas such as this mountain has grown taller this year, that one is crying at a certain time, and another one has been humming for months..."Li's painting of mountains has gone through three periods. The first period is characterized by his sketches during his undergraduate years at Yunnan Art Academy. The second period focuses on his “cave series” created during his years in Beijing. This exhibition presents works of the third period - "The Living Mountain" series created after his return to Yunnan. The environment in which Li was raised and his capacity as an independent documentary film director enables him walking in the mountains all the time and facing the mountains, people and customs of them. For him,“mountain” was finally transformed from "mountain shape", through a mysterious and unknowable mental space, into “mountain realm” which integrated with himself as one. Fortunately, contemporary art gives artists more freedom and a variety of choices . Artists can create following their own nature without any shackles. When he paints the mountains in his heart, he also paints himself in the mountains. He is free in the mountains, integrated himself with Heaven, earth and mountains, in which he is able to enter an infinite state of freedom. Whereas the process of painting mountains, by artistic means, expresses the infinity of his mind, thereby finding the unpredictable critical point between sensibility and rationality. Not being able to go outdoors during the year 2020 to 2023,he sat on the balcony of his home in Kunming and stared at the sky every day. The freely changing clouds seemed to become another form of the mountain in his heart. Clouds emerge from the emptiness and then vanish into it. The sky has different colors every day, and the clouds have different shapes every time, just like mountains have different emotions. Rather than saying that Li Youjie captures the intangible images through painting, it is better to say he actually breaks down the barrier between the viewer and himself through a certain gaze, then he holds your hand roaming together in the infinite "mountain realm" . Heidegger believes that existence precedes beings. Li Youjie completed the experience of regressing from "beings" to "existence" while undergoing integration with the mountain. The exploration of the new relationship between human and nature proposed by Latour, who combines the theories of "Anthropocene" and "Gaia Hypothesis", coincides with the issues explored by Li Youjie's artistic creation. Just like the subtitle of Eduardo Kohn’s ‘How Forest Think’ states, Li Youjie’s art is ‘toward an anthropology beyond the human’.
