一些动物的两性选择,性选择成本提高到了空前的地步,甚至会威胁到个体的生存。
例如雄性负子蝽。
负子,顾名思义,雄性负子蝽承的使命之一就是背负着雌性产下的卵,直到卵孵化。
由于智力的提升,社会结构的改变,人类的性选择已经远比普通动物复杂得多。
有进化生物学家认为,人类这样的特征,正是两性选择造成的。[2]
女性之所以隐蔽排卵期,拥有各种假说。
虽然这些假说都有足于女性“隐蔽”排卵期,但从生理特征上来解释,应该更加接近真相。
包括类人猿在内的雌性哺乳动物往往在发情期通过肿胀的外阴来吸引雄性,但人直立行走之后,视野脱离外阴。
由于人类脑容量的提升,女性极其容易难产,从而令盆腔更大的女性在生殖竞争中胜出。 人类拥有更长的婴幼儿期,乳房更大的女性有利于哺乳(圆形的乳房,也是生育的信号[4])。 在女性身上,年龄对生育能力的影响远远高过于男性,这就会令男性选择配偶的时候,有年轻化的性选择偏好,从而造成女性演化过程中偏向幼态特征(东方成年女性比西方成年女性有着更高的幼态特征,极有可能来源于古典文明男性性偏好的长期选择)。
更加崇拜力量的民族来说,反而可能会觉得强健的男性更美,甚至女性也会有强健体魄的需求。 汉朝魏晋兴男风,唐朝以丰腴为美。
