Probabilistic design of offshore anchors in spatially variable soil
Geotechnical engineering involves various sources of uncertainties arising from ground properties, data interpretation, geotechnical prediction models, design loads, all of which can propagate and significantly influence the final geotechnical design. A key challenge in geotechnical engineering is to effectively manage these uncertainties in geotechnical design. As a sophisticated approach, probabilistic analysis can explicitly quantify these uncertainties and systematically assess their impacts on the final design, potentially producing a more cost-effective and consistent design across different site conditions. Plate anchors have been recognised as an economical anchoring solution for floating offshore structures due to their higher capacity-to-weight ratios. This seminar will explore the probabilistic design of plate anchors against pullout failure in spatially variable soil in offshore settings. In this study, an analytical approach was proposed and validated by the Random Finite Element Method (RFEM) over a wide range of soil and anchor parameters.
