"Long queues at Guangzhou Metro stations are seriously disrupting the daily routines of commuters." On December 9, multiple Guangzhou residents voiced their frustration online, complaining about sudden, long lines at metro security checks, which led to delays and pay deductions for being late.

New Security Regulations Lead to Long Morning Lines

Netizens claim that new security measures have caused massive queues during peak hours. A day earlier, on December 8, Guangzhou Metro announced updated security screening procedures to enhance passenger safety. The new rules require all passengers to pass through security gates, and all items must go through scanning machines. If the security gate or scanner alerts, staff will manually inspect items, including opening bags if necessary. Guangzhou Metro also advised that during rush hours, wait times might increase compared to normal days, urging passengers to plan their travel accordingly.

Details of the Security Changes

Some netizens shared their experiences, stating that after the changes, passengers must go through manual checks one at a time, with the next person only allowed through after the previous inspection is completed. Any items in pockets, such as those in jackets or trousers, must be removed and shown to security staff. For bags containing items like power banks, the bags must be opened, and the power banks inspected to ensure they comply with regulations before being cleared.

"This level of security feels like boarding a plane," remarked one netizen. A process that used to take one minute now takes up to half an hour during peak times, resulting in massive congestion and chaotic scenes.

Metro Authority’s Response

Reporters contacted Guangzhou Metro’s official customer service, where representatives confirmed the current "human through gate, items through scanner" approach and mandatory bag checks. However, they could not provide a timeline for how long this policy would remain in effect.
