国际高中的英语课是不是就是雅思课?许多家长、学生在选择国际课程时,都会特别关注这个问题。雅思是出国留学必须要完成的一项语言考试,包含听、说、读、写四个部分,旨在评估学生是否具备良好的语言能力,能够适应全英文的学习、生活环境。

然而,仅仅具备语言能力还不足以应对海外大学的学术要求。无论是什么专业,海外院校都很注重培养学生的阅读与写作能力。如果未曾接受过专业的全英文阅读、写作、批判性思维(Critical Thinking)、公众演讲(Public Speaking)等能力训练,在面对常见的阅读、写作要求时,留学生往往要经历不小的挑战与艰难的适应期,甚至会造成部分学生的学习障碍。

我校国高不仅致力于培养优秀的学生,更注重学生是否能真正适应海外生活,具备从容面对学习、生活等各方面挑战的能力。为此,我校国际高中英语课程大量融入了类似海外大学课堂模式的内容,学生需要阅读不同题材、话题丰富的文章,在老师的指导下深入理解内容,并将所思所得以论文的形式呈现。中国学生普遍在英语写作方面略显薄弱,国高老师投入大量时间,专门讲授英文论文的写作格式、规范、行文风格等,帮助学生全方位提高英语综合素养。

Project Based Learning(项目式学习)融合了学习、研讨、实践、展示等多种学习形式,能够充分调动学生的积极性和主动性,激发课堂活力。近期,高二年级的英语老师Ms.J.Xiang以课题研究的形式,指导学生们读完了一本全英文小说。学生将自己的读后体会,以论文、日记、报纸等多种形式呈现。

According to PBLWorks, “Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.” Our school’s novel project aims to nurture individual qualities and skills of students including but not limited to: leadership, communication, collaboration, self-management, engagement, critical-thinking, and creativity in order to better prepare them for college life abroad.


The Giver by Lois Lowry is a dystopian novel that takes place in a futuristic United States. The story is about a young boy named Jonas, who grows up in a community where everything seems perfect but lacks feelings and memories. In fact, the whole community is governed by strict rules and order that the boy later questions as he is chosen to receive memories and knowledge in order to guide and advise his people. The novel makes us think about what it means to be different and the importance of remembering our past.


Students were asked to take the ideas from The Giver and portray them in innovative and exciting ways. We used art, writing and imagination to talk about concepts like individual identity, the past, and emotions. By looking at these topics, we hope to get people thinking and talking about how our world works and how we can improve it. This project is all about expressing ideas in fun and creative ways to help everyone understand and think about important topics in society.

学生心得  Book Review


Elaine

Reading this novel and completing the final project have greatly improved my reading and comprehension skills, as I need to read the storyline and think about the protagonist's thoughts and potential emotions, and then complete this newspaper based on my understanding. Making a newspaper is based on the perspective of ordinary residents in the novel, which requires me to filter out a lot of information. 


As readers, we can be said to be from a God's perspective. We know everything that happens here, but the characters in the novel are unaware. To some extent, this incident also reminds me of the need to constantly empathize and understand others. Reading such materials not only enhances our English proficiency, but more importantly, it allows us to receive the ideas conveyed in the materials and trigger deeper thinking, thereby achieving a qualitative improvement.

阅读这本小说和制作完成期末作业很好地提升了我的阅读和理解能力,因为我需要阅读故事情节,思考主人公的想法和潜在情感,再根据自己的理解来完成这张报纸。制作报纸是基于文中普通居民的视角,这使得我需要过滤掉许多信息。因为作为读者,我们可以说是上帝视角,我们知道这里所发生的一切,但文中的人物却不知道。这件事某种程度上也提醒了我时刻需要换位思考理解他人。阅读这样的读物不仅能够提升英语能力,更重要的是能够让我们接收到读物里所传递的思想,引发我们更深的思考,从而实现质的提升。

Giver is a novel we read in the English class. To be honest, this is the most special novel I have read because it has shown me the author's rich imagination. In this book, the special community, rules, and abilities of individuals are the novel's highlights. 


Although the rich inner emotions of the characters in the book are not described too much, I felt very strongly about them, so I chose the form of a diary to help the characters in the book express their inner emotions. Through a series of coherent plots, the author prompts readers to consider human nature: Do people need the ability to feel love and pain? Do they choose to live in a repetitive, quiet life or live in a world of emotions?  

《Giver》是一本我们在英语课堂上阅读的小说,诚实的说,这是我读过的最特别的一本小说,它让我见识到了作者丰富的想象力。在这本书中,特别的社区、特别的规则以及个别人特别的能力,都是这本小说精彩的地方。虽然书中并没有过多描写人物丰富的内心情绪,但我还是很强烈的感受到了,所以我选择了日记的形式,帮助书中人物把内心的情绪表达出来。作者在书中通过一系列连贯的情节引发了读者对人性的思考:人们是否需要感受爱和痛苦的能力?是选择生活在重复、平静的生活里还是生活在有各种情绪的世界中?

We learned a lot from making this board game. The production steps required the cooperation of all of the team members; we did board planning, card designing, verification of novel details, and balancing of the game’s attributes. Although everyone had their own understanding and ideas about the game, through continuous communication, trial and error, and compromise, we had finally achieved such a satisfactory result. 


Throughout the process, we learned how to communicate effectively and realized the power of teamwork,without the help of team members, it is not realistic to complete such a huge workload in 2 weeks.

制作这个棋盘游戏让我们获益良多。制作步骤需要组内人员各方面配合,从棋盘规划,卡牌设计,到回原书查证,再到游戏属性平衡,这些都是大家自己完成的。但是每个人都有自己对游戏的理解和想法,通过不断的交流、试玩、磨合,最终才有了这样一个令我们满意的成果。在整个过程中,我们学会了如何有效沟通,也认识到了团队的力量:没有组员的帮助,在一周之内完成如此庞大的工作量是不太现实的。

Perception and understanding: I spent a long time on this thesis and achieved a relatively satisfactory result. If one wants to write a good paper, they need to have an in-depth understanding of their topic and argument. Therefore, I needed to have a comprehensive understanding of the community described in the book. For this reason, I have read the book many times and recorded the similarities and differences between this community and real society. At the same time, I also needed to reread many paragraphs carefully to understand every word. To write an essay well,I not only need to understand the topic but also work hard on the structure of the article.                                    

感悟和理解:这次的论⽂花费了很⻓时间,也取得了⼀个相对满意的成绩。想要写好一篇论⽂,首先要对论题和论点有⼀个深⼊的理解,因此我需要对书中描述的community有更全⾯的认知。为此,我多次翻看书籍,记录下这个社区中出现的与现实社会的相同与不同点。同时,我还需要精读许多段落,将每⼀个单词都弄懂。虽说书读百遍,其义⾃现,但是看书也要有合适的⽅法,这样效率才能更⾼。想要写好⼀篇essay,不仅需要在论题理解上有见解,也需要在⽂章结构上多下功夫。


成果展示,精彩纷呈。我们对国高学生在此次项目式学习活动中所展现的进步感到欣慰。今后,我校国际高中将根据教学需求,持续开展多样化的项目式学习活动,发掘学生潜能,让学生在合作实践中不断提升个人素养,助力学生实现知识的有效运用,为他们未来的成长发展奠定坚实基础。
