About this role


This role will be for 36 weeks, working 14 hours per week.


The Role


Reporting to the Communications Officer as part of the Connect team in the Adam Smith Business School, and working closely with colleagues from across the University (including External Relations, and the Communications and Public Affairs Office) the post holder will help support social media and general marketing and communications activities aimed at Chinese audiences, including current and prospective students, alumni and partner institutions.


Main Duties and Responsibilities


1. To manage the Chinese-language social media accounts of the Adam Smith Business School (eg. Weibo) – delivering a comprehensive communications plan and excellent customer service in order to engage with key Chinese-speaking stakeholders.


2. To research other social media tools and their use in China, and to support the development of the Adam Smith Business School’s digital marketing strategy and University’s social & digital media international strategy in China and East Asia.


3. To monitor and benchmark the Adam Smith Business School against other University and corporate Chinese social media accounts.


4. To monitor social media accounts and correspondence for any issues that may have a reputational impact and require a considered response from the Communications Officer or wider Communications and Public Affairs Office, or provide useful insight for University staff in carrying out their activities. 


5. To translate material where necessary/appropriate (English to Mandarin & vice-versa).


6. Primary communication language on social media will be Mandarin.


7. To assist in any other general marketing/research duties, agreed with the Communications Officer where appropriate, including:

Supporting the team researching media outlets and communications channels

Liaise with admissions and recruitment colleagues to respond to students in a timely and accurate manner during key periods in the recruitment/on-boarding cycle

Liaise with media contacts from partner institutions to help publicise events and/or awards conferred on UofG academics.

Undertake marketing research with key focus groups to gain insights


8. Engaging with staff and students to source stories and a calendar of content for social media channels and to gain feedback and insight on marketing activities.


9. Helping the Communications Officer and Marketing Officer to implement an effective and engaging international social media strategy for China and Asia.


10. Creating engaging content (including video & multimedia) to engage with our Chinese audiences.


11. Compile analytics and reports for the Communications Officer and Marketing Officer to analyse campaigns and communications.


Knowledge/Qualifications, 

Skills and Experience


Required Degree Discipline: Any


The essential criteria for the role are:


E1. VQ 2/3, Standard Grades, City and Guilds OR equivalent - replace with - Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 4 in English and Mathematics (National 4) or equivalent


E2. Fluency in Mandarin and excellent writing skills in English and Chinese


E3. Strong English-language skills, must meet the University’s minimum English language requirements; Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format (English and

Chinese Mandarin), and build and maintain relationships


E4. In-depth knowledge and understanding of Chinese-language social media environment and platforms (eg. Weibo, WeChat, etc.) and how they can be deployed in different scenarios


E5. Knowledge of Scottish culture


E6. Strong IT/Web skills


E7. Team player, with the confidence to use own initiative and share ideas with others when necessary


E8. Good technical understanding and can quickly develop new skills including video editing


E9. Excellent writing skills, with the ability to write well for different social media platforms within specific guidelines


E10. Confident communicator with the ability to build relationships with people at different levels within the team


E11. Good time management and prioritisation skills with the ability to cope with a demanding work schedule and produce high quality work, often to tight deadlines


E12. Creativity and enthusiasm


E13. Respect confidentiality at all times


E14. High level of accuracy and attention to detail


E15. Relevant work experience or relevant experience gained through studies with qualifications above, or 2 years relevant work experience


E16. Demonstrable experience of using Chinese social media


E17. Experience of working in a team environment


The desirable criteria for the role are:


D1. Knowledge of higher education sector and ideally the University of Glasgow


D2. Knowledge of Chinese culture (including education system and university application system)


D3. Experience of handling a Weibo and/or WeChat public account


D4. Practical experience of media environment (eg. Weibo, WeChat, etc)


D5. Practical experience of video creation and editing
