Penn State has a global presence with partnerships and programs worldwide. It promotes international experiences for students through study abroad programs, international campuses, and collaborative research with global partners.
Penn State strives to foster a diverse and inclusive community, with various programs and initiatives aimed at supporting underrepresented groups and promoting equity in education and campus life.
Research Project Description: The Fleishman Root Agroecology Lab is seeking a PhD student for a study on root systems and deep soil health. Agricultural soils often suffer from degradation due to overuse and adverse environmental conditions, which limits their capacity to support plant productivity. Consequently, practices are increasingly promoted that favor soil health, including maintaining living roots in the soil year-round. However, we lack a clear understanding of which root properties are most likely to improve soil properties like nutrient availability, carbon sequestration, and water infiltration.
The research project will examine the root systems of four perennial forage crops (three grasses and alfalfa) and soil properties up to 1-meter depth. Experiments will take place in greenhouses and at a field site. Potential areas for training include root ecophysiology, soil and rhizosphere microbiome analyses, and soil biogeochemical and water cycling. The Root Agroecology Lab values an inclusive environment and applicants from a wide variety of personal, work, and educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Location and graduate program: The PhD student will be advised by Dr. Suzanne Fleishman in the Plant Science Department at Penn State University. State College, Pennsylvania is a midsized town with ample restaurants, frequent arts events, and quick access to parks and hiking trails.
The field site for the research project is approximately 25 minutes from the University. Students have the option to complete their degree through two different graduate programs: Agricultural, Environmental, and Plant Sciences (AEPS) program or the Ecology Intercollege Graduate Program at Penn State. Outside of the graduate program, there are ample opportunities to interact with other students and faculty, including through the Center for Root and Rhizosphere Biology, the Ecology Institute, and the One Health Microbiome Center.
How to Apply: Reviews of applications will begin on a rolling basis on October 2 and informal interviews will begin the week of October 7. Interested applicants should email Dr. Suzanne Fleishman (smfleishman@psu.edu ) with the subject header “PhD Position in Root Systems and Deep Soil Health” and include the following:
An email briefly mentioning your motivations, experience, and research interests
for a PhD (less than 8 sentences).
A copy of your unofficial transcripts.
Your CV/Resume.
For any additional information or questions regarding the position, please contact Dr. Fleishman (smfleishman@psu.edu) . The start date is flexible in the year 2025, but May 2025 is preferred.
