I believe that being a DJ is all about finding the right sounds and then playing them. This process can take a long time because it's not just about picking tracks from a record crate or folder when you're in the club. It's also about being mindful in everyday life, constantly on the lookout for sounds that resonate deeply with the soul. In fact, searching for these sounds in life is probably the biggest part of a DJ's job.
So, I’m DJing all the time.
When it comes to finding the right sounds, it’s a complex task, even though it might sound simple. The complexity lies in understanding what your musical judgment is based on and how it’s developed.
Theoretically, all judgment is based on cognition, and our cognition comes from the information we gather.
Everything in the world is constantly changing—information is continually updated, knowledge frameworks are always evolving, and our cognition is constantly being refreshed. Building solid judgment dynamically in this ever-changing process is crucial because it directly affects the sounds you create on the dance floor.
In the dance culture scene, people often discuss topics like "finding yourself before you play music" or the famous saying, "I'm a DJ, I'm what I play." These conversations are essentially about judgment.
Developing good judgment is the most valuable thing this job has given me, and sharing music with you on the dance floor is perhaps the happiest byproduct of it all.
