Launched in 2018 in Shanghai, the China International Import Expo (CIIE) has become the ultimate gateway for international businesses to tap into China’s market potential. It is the world’s first national-level exposition dedicated to imports, hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. Now in its 7th edition this year, in conjunction with the 7th Hongqiao International Economic Forum, the expo lasted for six days, running from Tuesday (11/5) to Sunday (11/10) at the National Exhibition and Convention Center. According to reports, the 360,000-square-meter enterprise exhibition at this year’s CIIE featured a record 3,496 exhibitors from 129 countries and regions, including 297 of the world’s top 500 and leading industry enterprises.

Carrying the theme “New Era, Shared Future,” numerous bright students from Fudan University attended this flagship Chinese event to witness and experience nearly 450 new technologies, products, and services making their debuts on this grand platform.

MINA SONO

I was fortunate enough to be in the audience for the forum on ‘Sustainable Development of the Global South and China-Africa Cooperation’.

This forum featured high-ranking government officials and field experts as speakers, making it a very insightful experience altogether. The speakers highlighted the crucial role of South-South cooperation in navigating unprecedented challenges and seizing shared opportunities in today’s volatile age, as well as China’s instrumental role in advancing this cooperation.

A moment that left a deep impression on me was when a speaker shared how Africa has faced the twin challenges of exploitation and marginalization on the world stage for many years. He emphasised that, in contrast, China’s approach has been rooted in a deliberate policy of friendship and a shared vision for a sustainable future.

Hearing this made me reflect on the significance of genuine partnerships, and on China’s ambitious goal of building a community with a shared future for mankind. It was inspiring to see how a vision rooted in solidarity and mutual growth is shaping the dialogue on development for both regions. It makes me feel as though a better world is possible, and that we are in the process of building it.

SOH ZHIHONG

Attending the CIIE was an eye-opener for me as a final-year Finance student from the National University of Singapore, currently on exchange at Fudan University. Initially, I expected it to be a grand trade fair showcasing products to Chinese consumers, but it turned out to be much more—a window into China’s economic future, especially in food, agriculture, and healthcare sectors.

While volunteering at the Singapore pavilion, I saw firsthand how local brands adapted products like Laksa noodles and Nasi Lemak-flavored popcorn to align with Chinese tastes while maintaining their cultural essence. It was a lesson in balancing tradition with market needs.

Exploring other sections, I was surprised by the emphasis on sustainability. Companies like Nippon Paint showcased more than just paints, they exhibited electric vehicles and building models that contribute to eco-friendly solutions. Yet, I could not help noticing a gap between innovative technologies and consumer demand—many efforts seemed driven more by corporate social responsibility than actual market needs.

The best part was speaking with entrepreneurs who shared stories about entering the Chinese market. Their insights on adaptability, strong execution, and letting go of preconceived ideas resonated deeply, inspiring me to consider launching my own career in China’s dynamic business landscape.

Before attending the CIIE, I knew it was a major event focused on enhancing imports into China by showcasing international products and innovations. I anticipated a strong emphasis on healthcare advancements, particularly in medical technology, and was eager to explore opportunities for collaboration.

While I could not visit my country's pavilion, I explored those of countries like Australia and Germany. I was impressed by the innovative health supplements on display, such as MinciNov and Sight-C, which highlighted advancements in natural wellness solutions. Compared to Pakistan’s offerings, which focused on traditional strengths, other nations showcased high-tech solutions, particularly in clean energy and robotics, with Japan and South Korea leading in AI-driven medical technology.

This expo to me highlighted global trends in sustainability, from renewable energy to eco-friendly pharmaceuticals. German and Swedish companies stood out with sustainable manufacturing innovations, while Japanese firms excelled in medical robotics.

I attended the 2024 CIIE as a first-year Master’s student in Neurosurgery at Fudan University. This experience was incredibly insightful, especially given my focus on healthcare advancements. I was excited to explore the cutting-edge technologies on display, particularly those from renowned Japanese companies. Panasonic showcased AI-driven smart home appliances and renewable energy solutions, demonstrating innovations in solar and air energy. Their efficient cold chain logistics technologies were also impressive, critical for food and pharmaceutical industries.

I found Omron’s “Uniform Temperature Control Technology” for chip manufacturing especially fascinating, as it supports the precision needed in semiconductor production. On the consumer side, LEGO’s interactive exhibit celebrating creativity and 3M’s sustainable products further demonstrated CIIE’s global reach.

I was particularly drawn to the AI-integrated medical devices on display. This exposure directly aligned with my own AI-driven medical education project, currently under development with Ruijin Hospital, for which I am leading the patent application. Seeing these innovations firsthand deepened my appreciation for AI’s transformative potential in healthcare. This experience inspired me to further integrate these technologies into my research, aiming to advance neurosurgery techniques and contribute meaningfully to the field.

I am Dokyung Kim, a third-year  Broadcasting major from South Korea. I had the meaningful opportunity to work as a coordinator and interpreter at the Korea Pavilion in the CIIE, a renowned and massive exhibition in China. Having participated last year and experienced the vibrant energy of the event, I eagerly joined again, hoping for another enriching experience. And indeed, the CIIE exceeded my expectations: it was filled with both Chinese and international visitors, with countless booths from diverse countries and industries offering a dynamic experience with never a dull moment.

At the Korea Pavilion, companies across two sectors—food and consumer goods—gathered to introduce Korean products and cuisine to the world. As a coordinator, I supported various activities, including introducing traditional Korean games and offering food tasting experiences, which was deeply rewarding. Representing Korean culture, cosmetics, and food, I felt a profound responsibility to showcase the best of Korea, putting forth my utmost effort with pride and dedication.

There were certainly challenging moments throughout, but once the event concluded, I felt an irreplaceable sense of fulfillment. I am confident that no matter what difficulties I face in the future, I can carry forward this experience and the valuable lesson that the most rewarding outcomes are those achieved through perseverance.

Attending the CIIE was a transformative experience that exceeded my expectations. My name is 郑世熙 (Jeong Sehee) from South Korea, currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration. I was eager to witness this globally renowned event and its focus on innovation and cross-cultural exchange.

Participating as a staff member at the Korea booth, I not only showcased our nation’s food products and cosmetics but also engaged visitors in cultural experiences. Watching Chinese attendees enjoy popular dishes like tteokbokki and kimbap, and participate in traditional games like the ones portrayed on Squid Game, brought a unique sense of fulfillment. The delight they expressed in trying free cultural activities, such as donning hanbok and taking photo booth pictures, was incredibly rewarding.

Beyond my booth, I explored other pavilions, gaining insights into how various countries emphasize sustainability and innovation. The expo showcased a diverse range of eco-friendly solutions, helping me understand the global shift toward sustainable practices.

This experience not only deepened my appreciation for Korea’s cultural impact but also broadened my perspective on international market trends. As I continue my studies, I aim to leverage these insights to drive sustainable projects, preparing me for a future career in business focused on sustainable growth.
