Introduction
Suzhou River was initially known as the Wusong River, but after the opening of the port in 1843 foreigners who arrived in Shanghai discovered that sailing upstream along the river could directly reach Suzhou. As a result, they started to call it the "Soochow Creek". "Soochow" being an older romanization of "Suzhou," reflecting the pronunciation at that time. Later, local Shanghai residents also adopted this name, and "Suzhou River" became the commonly used term for the section of the Wusong River that flows through the Shanghai city area, a name that is still used today.
