 DESTINATION DETAILS

Fujian Tulou, Fujian Province

The Fujian Tulou are Chinese rural dwellings unique to the Hakka in the mountainous areas in southeastern Fujian, China. They were mostly built between the 12th and the 20th centuries.

A Tulou is usually a large, enclosed, and fortified earth building, most commonly rectangular ◼ or circular ⚫ in configuration, with very thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three and five stories high and housing up to 800 people.

TUCKED in the rolling subtropical mountains of the southeast Chinese province of Fujian is a series of giant multistoried homes built with wood and fortified with mud walls.

Fujian Tulou was inscribed in 2008 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The Tulou building workshop

The Tulou's most significant feature is the mud earth wall. But what's even more special is the technique people used to make that. Tulou is considered "a building built with special materials and wonderful methods"!
