Introduction
Following the conclusion of the First Opium War, Shanghai underwent a transformation, opening its doors to the global stage. The British were the pioneers, establishing the first British settlement in the city. Soon thereafter, the United States and France followed, founding the American settlement and the French Concession.
The French Concession expanded its reach by ingeniously "building roads crossborder." The area became known for its refined atmosphere, serving as an idyllic residential enclave for the upper class. Luxurious villas and apartments adorned the landscape.
Did you know that the French Concession housed around 20,000 adherents of Tsarist Russia? Hence the nickname "Little St. Petersburg" during the 1930s. This Russian presence definitely added to the district's cultural diversity.
Presently, the region is the proud home of illustrious institutions.
