An Indian student who faked his father's death to secure a full scholarship to a prestigious US university is set to be deported.
Aryan Anand, 19, has been charged with fabricating admission and financial aid documents to attend Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.
Anand's deceit came to light after he anonymously confessed on Reddit. In his post titled "I have built my life and career on lies," Anand detailed how he forged transcripts, financial statements, and even his father's death certificate to gain admission and financial support from Lehigh. He further admitted to creating a fake email address to impersonate his school principal.
The unraveling of Anand's scheme began when a Reddit moderator noticed his post. Despite Anand not naming himself or the university, the moderator deduced his identity by linking his confession to Lehigh University, the only institution Anand followed on Reddit. The moderator then contacted the university and provided all the gathered evidence.
According to ABC News, Anand’s fraudulent application included meticulously crafted lies aimed at securing his position at the university and receiving a full scholarship. His fabricated documents and false statements about his father's death played a significant role in his acceptance and financial aid approval.
Following the tip-off from the Reddit moderator, Lehigh University took action, leading to Anand's arrest two months ago. On June 12, 2024, Anand pleaded guilty to forgery. His admission to Lehigh has since been revoked.
While Anand faced the possibility of a 10 to 20-year prison sentence, he will instead be expelled and deported back to India due to a plea deal with the university. This agreement allows him to avoid jail time but ends his academic ambitions in the US.
