主讲人介绍

1

Prof. Haydn Chen

Biography

Prof. Haydn Chen earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA. He became a full professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987, later joining the City University of Hong Kong in 2000 as Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science. From 2004 to 2012, he served as President of Tunghai University in Taiwan and subsequently held the position of Vice Rector at the University of Macau from 2012 until August 2017. Prof. Chen is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, the University of Macau, and Tunghai University.

Presently, he serves as the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and Liaison Director in the USA for the Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. He is also an Honorary Professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.

Honors and Awards

Prof. Chen is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the German Humboldt Research Award, the Excellent Teaching Award at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Taiwan Outstanding Scholar Award, the Hou Chin Tui Award, and the Lu Tze Hung Memorial Award of Taiwan. He is a Fellow of ASM International, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and the Materials Research Society of Taiwan (MRS-Taiwan).

Research Interests

Prof. Chen has supervised over 50 MS and PhD students and collaborated with more than 20 research associates and visiting scholars across four universities. He has authored or co-authored over 350 journal articles and delivered more than 250 technical presentations, plus over 100 talks and speeches related to higher education. His research has evolved from metals and alloys, where he pioneered x-ray diffraction studies of kinetic processes in Ni-based superalloys, Fe-based shape memory alloys, and Al-based light metal alloys, to thin films of electric ceramics, including ferroelectrics, piezoelectrics, and nitrides, to contact and interconnects in semiconductor materials.

Involvement in Higher Education

Prof. Chen has a unique blend of experience in teaching, research, and academic administration in the U.S., Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. He is a strong advocate for integrating liberal arts education with modern technical curricula, emphasizing the importance of soft skills in the age of artificial intelligence. His work focuses on developing digital literacy and essential skills like communication, emotional intelligence, adaptability, and teamwork. Prof. Chen believes that blending technical education with these indispensable soft skills prepares students for a dynamic and unpredictable job market, ensuring their success in professional fields.

2

Prof. Daniel Shoemaker

Professor Daniel P. Shoemaker received his BS with Honors in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois in 2006 and his PhD in Materials from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2010. His doctoral work focused on using neutron scattering and real-space modeling to understand the structure-property relationships of disordered magnetic and electronic oxides. In 2011 he began a postdoctoral appointment in the Materials Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory where he investigated the synthesis of superconductors and semiconductors with a focus on in situ spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. Shoemaker joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an Assistant Professor in August 2013.
