The PhD projects will focus on three different interrelated sectors within the local and regional food complex by way of a distributed and shared multi-sited approach. Project 1 will focus on agricultural production, looking at individual households and farming enterprises. Project 2 will research in small- and mid-scale food processing factories, primarily in the dairy and meat sector, while project 3 will investigate the gastronomy sector and its socio-economic embeddedness in the regional setting. In addition to that, a postdoctoral researcher will study trade with food products within the region and beyond. She or he will, together with Prof. Finke, also serve as a project coordinator.

The Social Sustainability of Agriculture and Food Systems Lab at the University of Georgia is recruiting a PhD student to conduct research on the complexities of adoption of “climate-smart” agricultural practices in the United States. Advised by Dr. Jennifer Jo Thompson, the selected student will carry out mixed-methods social science research to increase understanding of the nuances of on-farm research and the barriers to adoption of conservation practices by commodity producers in the United States. The position will be funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as part of the Innovative Agriculture and Marketing Partnership (IAMP), a public, private, tribal partnership focused on expanding conservation agricultural practices in the state of Idaho.

This project examines the implications of critical mineral mining for water equity in the arid Great Basin. In particular, it will shed light on three emerging dynamics that remain understudied: 1) growing investment in Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technologies, 2) interlocking federal and state-level policy transitions, and 3) varied responses from affected communities. The project involves a regional geospatial analysis, seven place-based case studies, and collaborations with community and Tribal partners. Engaging communities directly through workshops and tribal forums, the project will strengthen networks and foster diverse participation in the pursuit of equitable and just critical mineral supply chains. By disseminating results broadly through online interactive tools, policy-briefs, and op-eds, it will distill key insights that will enhance public understanding and support policy improvements associated with the water equity implications of critical mineral mining.
