This exciting interdisciplinary project focuses on the relationships between people, places, public policy, and the environment. The student will join the team of the national Energy Demand Research Centre, specifically working on the Place-Based Energy Retrofit and Regeneration (PEER) project led by the University of Manchester. Within the PEER project, the student will undertake an independent course of work to explore the role of community organisations, advocacy groups, local government and other energy intermediaries in enacting low-carbon development. The project will involve, in the main, a qualitative, placed-based investigation of diverse forms of public engagement and participation in the retrofit process within the United Kingdom.

简介:
This novel research project aims to explore the growing 'decarbonisation divide' within the United Kingdom’s housing sector. The project seeks to develop new conceptual and policy tools to analyse the legal frameworks, strategic decisions, policy practices and spatial patterns linked to the shift away from fossil fuel use in the residential housing stock. This involves several aspects, including how governance practices impact the promotion and regulation of low-carbon energy technologies, the changing nature of cities and towns (involving, also, dynamics of ‘renoviction’ and low-carbon gentrification – see Bouzarovski et al. 2018), as well as the unequal lived experience of fossil fuel phase-out.

This project examines the experiences of Muslim women in British electoral politics at the national, the regional and the local level. Minority political participation is often taken as a hallmark of their integration in society. Whilst there is research on Muslim political participation in Europe, less is known about the political engagement of Muslim women. The research is interested in why these women aspire for political office, how they negotiate their Muslim identities and personal biographies in political campaigning and what kind of disabling and enabling factors they encounter when running for office.

简介:
Innovation and strategy implementation are challenging in organisations because they require people to change their attitudes and behaviours. Studies of organisations have identified storytelling as a powerful strategic tool and history as an important resource that can help. Research has explored the way that managers can or could create narratives in the way they lead their organisations through strategic change. For example, managers use storytelling for sensemaking and to help create a shared vision for an organisation (Beltagui et al., 2017; Humphreys et al., 2012). Meanwhile prospective history (Suddaby et al., 2019) suggests that managers can use a historical understanding to create a strategic vision of the future. Yet limited research looks at how the content and delivery of storytelling can bring about the desired impacts. Questions include whether verbal, written or digital stories influence people’s perceptions differently and which type of stories is more or less likely to inspire action. This funded PhD will explore these questions by testing the impact of history-based digital storytelling to identify which features of the stories and of their delivery are most influential

简介:
The industrial environment in the UK is at a most critical moment. In comparison with other G8 economies, the UK has below average real productivity growth, both in measures of output per hour and output per worker across service and manufacturing industries (House of Commons, 2018). The UK industry is also lagging behind in addressing environmental and climate change issues, compared to other leading world economies, and is unlikely to reach the ‘net-zero’ greenhouse-gas emission level set by the Committee on Climate Change (Committee on Climate Change, 2019 & 2021). This study aims to uncover the full potential of servitization and its associated digitalisation and business model innovations as a response to the urgent productivity and environmental challenges.
