简介：

Humans, animals, and the environment are facing a multitude of planetary crises – from climate change and biodiversity loss, to air, soil, and water pollution. We urgently need to better understand their drivers and impacts, and the range of potential responses for mitigation and adaptation. We need to tackle these problems in a holistic, integrative, and transdisciplinary manner, aiming to provide actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. This vision is at the heart of the mission of NYU’s Department of Environmental Studies and is a fundamental aspect of our new PhD program. At the core of the program are three research themes that encompass faculty research and form the basis of the PhD program: Food and Land Use Systems, Ecological Systems, and Governance Systems. Across these themes is a deep integration of human, animal, and environmental issues, reflecting our expansive and innovative focus on both Animal Studies and Environmental Studies.

We invite applications from data scientists/ quantitative geographers/ demographers for an 36-month postdoctoral research position to support the FuturePop project. This project aims to generate high resolution gridded population estimates globally for future scenarios until 2100, with estimates further disaggregated by age and sex. In addition, uncertainty estimates will also be provided. The data will support a spectrum of fields, primarily health and natural hazard applications. The applicant will work closely with the WorldPop group at the University of Southampton, and will work within a wider team to develop methods and generate the new data. We encourage applications from those with and without geospatial experience, but are willing to learn.

The successful candidate will work with Dr Josh Siepel, who is leading the Creative PEC’s core research on geography, innovation and R&D, and access to finance in the creative industries, to deliver academic and policy outputs.  The candidate will also engage with other members of the Creative PEC consortium, as well as stakeholders and members of the policy community. The tasks of the role include collection and quantitative analysis of firm- and region-level data (including administrative, financial and unstructured data), econometric and other advanced analysis, and mapping and visualising data. The Post-doctoral Research Fellow will work at St Andrews within the Horizon Europe C-BLUES (Carbon Sequestration in Blue Ecosystems) project (with a partner project in the People’s Republic of China) and will have an interest in blue carbon science-policy integration.
