In line with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and with the research themes proposed by the new Horizon Europe Programme, the overarching objective of the present research project is providing policy suggestions to implement an inclusive and sustainable valorization of cultural heritage, aimed at making the most of cultural heritage for local development, minimizing the associated socio-economic costs. The topic is particularly important within a post-covid scenario in which recovery and resilience can well pass through these specific channels. Possible policies aimed at favoring a sustainable valorization of cultural heritage, also limiting the potentially detrimental effects of some types of cultural tourism, will be proposed, and carefully discussed.

The postdoctoral position is tied to the research groups Level of Living (LNU) and Social Policy (SOCPOL). The Socpol group conducts research on the impact of social policies both at an individual and societal level, often in an internationally comparative perspective. The LNU group carries out research on welfare development and socal stratification regarding inter alia working life, family life, education, economic resources and health. The research is conducted in both a macro and micro level perspective, mainly on the basis of quantitative data. The macro analyses concern e.g. different explanations of social policy development while the micro analyses concern living conditions of individuals both in the shorter and longer run.

The aim of this supervisor-led doctoral scholarship is to produce a new critical evidence base on the transferability of policies and practices geared towards place adaptation and urban retrofit by examining how and why place adaptation concepts and urban retrofit practices move between places and whether policies that work in one place can be successfully transferred to another. Using and developing critical theories on ‘urban policy mobility’, which conceptualise policy innovations as being ‘in motion’ and moving across and between national and cultural boundaries through dynamic human networks, the studentship will be an integral part of the wider URBAN RETROFIT UK research project which ultimately seeks to create a series of global evidence exchange hubs where planning and development stakeholders can come together to share emerging practices. Further refinement of the research questions, methodological approach and geographical focus of the studentship will be determined by the doctoral student in collaboration with the project supervisors as the project evolves.

The Wageningen Centre for Sustainability Governance at Wageningen University is looking for a motivated PhD candidate to join our research team. Our focus is on understanding and managing the disruptions caused by extreme weather events, like severe droughts, which lead to water scarcity. This PhD project is part of a larger effort to learn how these extreme events affect different aspects of society, from government policies and services to everyday life. This project aims to fill that gap by studying water scarcity across three cases with distinct development contexts and systems of governance (e.g. USA, South Africa, Kenya, Colombia, Mexico, Nepal, India). We aim to understand how different regions manage water risks and how provisioning systems and everyday practices are evolving in response.

The 3 PhD research fellows will work together in the research project “Analysing and Identifying the Circular Economy’s contribution to a just Transition. A Transdisciplinary Environmental Justice Approach in the Brussels Capital Region” (AICE-T-). The aim of the AICE-T project is to identify and analyse the potential contributions of circular economy initiatives to achieving just transitions. The AICE-T project will use an innovative transdisciplinary research design, combining an assessment of existing circular economy initiatives in the Brussels Region with a set of participatory research methodologies geared toward capacity building and the fostering of organisational change.
