Advancements of AI Technology in the Built Environment

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fundamentally reshaping the built environment by introducing innovative methodologies across planning, design, construction, and operation. This special issue aims to delve into the latest AI-driven advancements, challenges, and opportunities concerning building envelope, space conditioning, lighting, control systems, and overall building performance. We invite research articles that focus on AI-driven smart technologies for high-performance buildings and cities, emphasizing not only technical advancements but also the impact on thermal comfort, ventilation, and human well-being. Additionally, we welcome contributions exploring innovations in air quality and infection control, as well as cutting-edge tools for design and decision-making that enhance operational efficiency and sustainability. Targeting a diverse audience of researchers across disciplines, this special issue emphasizes rigorous studies that illuminate the broader environmental and societal implications of integrating AI technologies into building design, operation, and urban planning. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, we aim to highlight how AI can contribute to creating healthier, more resilient, and sustainable built environments that meet the challenges of contemporary society.
