East Asia has witnessed rapid transformations alongside persistent traditions in gender relations and gender beliefs within and beyond families. Education expansion and economic development have provided women with greater opportunities for empowerment and self-realization beyond the domestic sphere. However, women continue to face signiciant career barriers in the public domain and pervasive gender stereotypes in private lives. Meanwhile, men have been repositioned differently within the evolving sociocultural landscapes, where their individualistic aspirations are often framed as contributing to familial well-being and communal development. Despite the general perception of East Asia as a region deeply rooted in patriarchy and familism, it is crucial to recogonize the substantial variations in how East Asian societies experience value shifts alongside economic development, as well as the diversity in gender beliefs and gender relations across social groups and subnational regions.

This special issue will build on existing studies on gender relations and gender beliefs in East Asia and present cutting-edge research on the emerging themes:
How gender dynamics unfold as people navigate diverse intimate and family relations, including but not limited to singlehood, dating, cohabitation, marriage, divorce, parenthood, etc.
How gender relations and gender beliefs have shifted amidst an era of uncertainty marked by economic slow-down, fluctuation, precarity, and the rising gig economy.
To what extent social institutions of property structures, legal titles, political participation, migration and mobility chances, etc. have been gendered or de-gendered.
How gender equality efforts have been negotiated, coordinated, and mediated, given institutional and sociocultural hurdles, and how communities, governments, and organizations have adapted their positions and strategies in dealing with gender issues.
We invite sociological and interdisciplinary perspectives on theoretical development and empirical research that speak to the themes of this special issue.
