In July and August, the restaurant is always crowded with tourists from all over the world. Because he is the only person in his family who can speak English, it is his job to look after the tourists when they eat at the restaurant. He explains the menu to tourists and takes their orders.
Where did he learn English? There is no school in Alex’s village, and during the school year, he travels 12 kilometres every day by bus to a nearby village to go to school. Together with his classmates, two evenings a week, he attends English classes at a language school in the same village. There is no bus service when his classes end, so his mother picks him up and brings him home. Alex doesn’t mind because he enjoys learning English. He wants to be a journalist, so he knows languages will be useful. He is very pleased that he can help his family with their business and the tourists are very happy that they can order their meals in English.

参考范文1:
Dearneighbors,
I’m Li Lan, a resident of City Garden Estate, just like you. Our community is beautiful, but let’s make it even greener! We often throw away old items like clothes, books, and appliances without a second thought. But why not recycle them?
I invite you all to join a “Share & Reuse” event. Bring along your unwanted but still usable items. You can either exchange them for something that’s new to you or simply donate them. This will not only strengthen our community bonds but also cut down on waste.
Let’s also set up a “Repair Corner.” Skilled volunteers can fix broken items like electronics, toys and clothes. Simple actions like these can transform our home into a model of sustainability.
Your small actions today can create a big difference tomorrow. So let’s join hands and create a greener community. Thanks for your attention.
Yours,
Li Lan
参考范文2:
Hello, neighbors!
I’m Li Lan, a resident of City Garden Estate. I’m really eager to make our community even better! Have you noticed that sometimes people throw away things like clothes, books, and even furniture that are still good to use?
Well, I have an idea: Let’s start a “Reuse and Recycle” activity! Through this, we can prevent these items from being turned into waste and also lend a helping hand to others. It's not only beneficial for the environment but also a great way to make new friends.
Here’s how you can help. First, let’s gather and bring along our unwanted but still usable items. Then, everyone can choose the ones they need. It will be just like a big treasure hunt! In addition, we can put boxes around the community where people can easily drop off things they no longer need. Then, we can give these things to people who can use them or to charities that help others.
By joining in, you’re making a difference for our neighbors and for our planet. Let’s work together and make City Garden Estate an even better place to live! Thanks for your support!
Yours,
Li Lan

C. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false
Last year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke too quickly. And I was afraid to ask questions, so I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything.
Then one day, I watched an English movie calledToy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie! Then I began to watch other English movies as well. Although I could not understand everything the characters were saying, their body language and the expressions on their faces helped me get their meaning. I also realized I could get the meaning by just listening for the key words. I discovered that listening to something you are interested in is the secret to language learning. I also learned useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake.” and “It serves you right.” I did not understand these sentences at first. To understand the story, I looked up the phrases in a dictionary.
Now I really enjoy my English class. I want to learn more new words and expressions. In this way, I can have a better understanding of English movies.

M: Susan, what are your ideas for solving pollution problems?
W: Well, Mike, the air is badly polluted nowadays because there is too much traffic on the roads. So, to cut down air pollution, we should take the bus or underground instead of driving private cars.
M: Yeah, I think so, too.
W: Also, we can ride a bike. It can save energy. What’s more, it’s good for our health and costs almost nothing.
M: I like bike riding, too. Do you have any good ideas for cutting down waste?
W: Mmm … I think simple things like shopping with a cloth bag can help. I started doing this a year ago.
M: That’s a good idea. I have an idea, too. I never order wooden chopsticks or plastic forks when ordering takeaway food. I use the chopsticks and forks at home.
W: That’s a great habit. And remember to throw rubbish in the litter bins and keep public places clean and beautiful for everyone.

The Secret of a Happy Family
A family is like a warm harbor where we can find love and support. For me, as a junior high school student, the secret of a happy family is simple.
First of all, we need to communicate. We should share our joys and sorrows at school, like howwe did in an exam or a fun activity with friends. Then, respect is very important. Parents should respect our ideas, like our choice of hobbies. And we should also respect their advice.
Sharing is another key point. We need to share the housework. We can help with cleaning or washing the dishes. What’s more, we should share our feelings, too.
When we do these things, our family will always be filled with love and laughter.
