The draft:

Human beings tend to likebig, tall and incredibly ancient trees, preferably growing at some pretty distance. The irony is that human beings cut down old trees all the time, for no reason but the inconvenience of their falling leaves, or because they are in the way of a road, or due to safety concerns. Too few of us understand the crucial contribution that trees make in our cities: cooling hot buildings, preventing storm-water runoff, improving air quality, or providing a habitat for our wild neighbors. Newly planted saplings can help, but with nowhere near the same effectiveness as mature trees. We need to fight just as hard to save them as we do replacing the trees we’ve already lost.

Step 2: Apply writing skills

Step 3: Edit your draft

People love large, ancient trees, yetironically, they cut them down for minor inconveniences or perceived risks. Few realize the vital roles which trees play, such as cooling, storm-water prevention, air purification, and wildlife habitats. The benefits of young trees are not as effective as those of mature ones, so we must preserve existing trees while planting new ones. (59 words)
