A shocking incident unfolded at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in Zhejiang Province, when a man attacked a doctor and then jumped from the building. Tragically, the injured doctor has since passed away.
According to the police report, at approximately 1:18 PM, a male assailant injured a doctor in the cardiology department before leaping from the hospital building. Both the injured doctor and the attacker were initially undergoing emergency treatment.
The hospital staff confirmed that the victim, Dr. Li Sheng, a cardiologist, was in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries. The incident has sparked widespread concern and debate across China about the safety of medical professionals and the underlying issues in the healthcare system.
Netizens from various regions of China expressed their thoughts on the tragic event:
A user from Guangdong commented, "Doctors are supposed to be angels, benefactors to patients. How and when did this relationship turn into enmity?"
Another from Shanghai noted, "Doctors wholeheartedly want to cure patients, but they're not miracle workers. They can't solve all medical mysteries. Even doctors themselves fall ill and die young sometimes. Stabbing a doctor is a crime."
A netizen from Henan pointed out the economic factors, saying, "The larger the hospital, the higher the overall costs. A single building can cost hundreds of millions or even billions. Medical equipment costs hundreds of millions to billions. All these expenses are passed on to patients."
A Zhejiang resident expressed sympathy for the victim: "It's pitiful that this good doctor, who was working overtime to treat patients during lunch, met with such a tragedy. The attacker wasn't even his patient."
As the investigation continues, many are calling for better protection for healthcare workers and a deeper examination of the systemic problems that lead to such violent outbursts in medical settings.
Adding to the complexity of this tragic event, it's been revealed that Dr. Li Sheng was not the attacker’s treating physician. The attacker had targeted him after his own wife died following treatment. However, her death was not due to treatment failure but rather due to a poor prognosis, leading to her suicide. The attacker, unable to accept this, sought revenge on Dr. Li. After stabbing Dr. Li, the attacker jumped from the building and succumbed to his injuries as well. This means neither criminal nor civil liability can be pursued, leaving Dr. Li’s death in vain.
