The Spring Festival is the Lunar New Year in China. Unlike other traditional festivals in China, which fall on fixed dates, the Spring Festival is unique. It is not just a single day; it is a process that marks the transition from the old lunar year to the new one. Therefore, celebrating the Spring Festival is also called "Guo Nian," meaning "passing the year."
The two most important days of the Spring Festival are "New Year's Eve" and "New Year's Day." New Year's Eve is the last day of the lunar year and is also known as “Chu Xi” or "Sui Chu." The Chinese character "Chu" (除) means to remove or replace, while "Xi" (夕) represents night. "Sui" (岁) means year. Thus, " Chu Xi " and "Sui Chu" signify the end of the old year and the arrival of the new one.
One significant tradition during New Year's Eve is "Shou Sui," which means staying up late. On this night, families gather together and stay awake to welcome the first day of the new year. Many believe that New Year's Eve marks the transition between yin and yang (an ancient Chinese philosophy), as well as the shift from the old to the new year. Staying up is thought to welcome good fortune and luck for the family in the coming year.
More importantly, during the Shou Sui period, family members chat, laugh, share stories from the past year, and make plans for the new year. This tradition strengthens family bonds and enhances the feelings of love and connection among relatives. Shou Sui is about cherishing memories and warmth from the past year while holding on to hopes and dreams for the future.
New Year's Day refers to the first day of the new lunar year, when people exchange greetings and blessings. By this time, the old year has come to an end, and the new year has begun!
Of course, an important festival like the Spring Festival is accompanied by various folk legends. According to one tale, "Nian" is a fierce monster that comes out to hurt people at the end of the year. To scare it away, people stay awake on New Year's Eve, put up red couplets, light bonfires, and set off firecrackers. This is why it is called "Guo Nian."
Regardless of the stories, the key themes of celebrating the New Year are "reunion" and "blessings." The hope for a better life in the future remains unchangedfor everyone.
