Stretchable architected fiber-network materials with well-organized micro-architectures evolve rapidly due to the customizable mechanical properties and functions. However, the relationship between fracture energy and specimen size is still elusive. In this work, we study the fracture energy size effect of stretchable architected fiber-network materials. It is found that the fracture energy increases with the specimen size ratio, H/h, within a range. When H/h reaches a transition ratio, Rt, the fracture energy approaches a plateau. The transition ratio is mainly affected by the topology of the fiber-network and the fiber-matrix modulus ratio. This work provides insights into the fracture of stretchable architected fiber-network materials and design for fracture-resistant architected stretchable devices.

开发一种兼具缓冲、智能和活性功能的包装材料是高度需要且具有挑战性的。为解决这一需求,我们以聚乙烯醇和壳聚糖为聚合物,通过冰模板法结合盐析处理,构建了具有层次结构的水凝胶。聚合物链协同海绵状多孔结构使水凝胶具有弹性和高缓冲效率。孔隙结构的大比表面积和大量的自由水,可以实现分子/颗粒的快速运动和快速反应,从而提高pH指示功能的灵敏性。银纳米粒子被固定在致密的聚合物网络中,使银离子能够持久释放。多孔结构使银离子在短时间内到达被保护物,对金黄色葡萄球菌和大肠杆菌具有抑菌作用,且细胞毒性小。这项工作突出了多功能水凝胶在各种包装系统中的潜力,如食品工业和脆弱的出土文物保护。

边界约束对剪切增稠转变至关重要的作用已被广泛的提出,但边界条件对系统内部动力学异质的发展的影响仍然未知。我们系统性地研究了边界条件对剪切增稠悬浮液失稳及失稳后动力学异质发展的影响。结果表明,边界条件可以剧烈地改变悬浮液的稳定性。当把边界从刚性约束逐渐调整为软约束,我们发现系统的失稳状态从局部应力及密度的瞬态跌宕行为过渡到持续存在的模式(密度波或阻滞的团簇),且这两种迥异的动力学行为被一个临界边界约束强度分开。我们的结果进一步证明它们这种迥异源自于不同的背后物理机制,持续的动力学结构被一个表征颗粒惯性的无量纲数控制,而瞬态的结构是由于当切应力跨过一个固定的临界阈值时触发了局部的刚性渗透。

Enhancing college students' English listening has been one of the major ESL objectives. To achieve this, it is imperative to conduct teaching- and learning-oriented diagnostic assessment. Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment (CDA) intends to measure learners’ specific knowledge structures and the processing skills so as to provide information about the learners' strengths and weaknesses (Leighton & Gierl, 2007). Currently, most CDA-based EFL studies on L2 listening are for large-scale tests (Min et al., 2021; Meng & Fu, 2023) while neglecting its classroom-based application, which is particularly significant for instruction and formative assessment . Additionally, most Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) CDA studies are based only on students’ correct responses while ignoring the valuable diagnostic information of the distractors. To address these issues, this study utilizes the non-parametric classification (NPC) methods to explore the diagnostic information at the MCQ option level in L2 listening comprehension for classroom assessment. 

The study firstly employed the Nominal Response Model (NRM) to conduct an in-depth analysis of the option quality for 18 listening MCQ items, and identified high-quality options to ensure the thus generated diagnostic information. In the second phase, five listening attributes were identified and defined based on Field's (2013) listening cognitive processing model and content analysis, and then the option-level Q-matrix was constructed by expert judgment and the participants’ verbal report. After this, 100 students’ listening responses were collected and analyzed with the NPC methods to obtain the individualized diagnostic results. The research findings indicated that with diagnostic information at the option level, CDA has the potential to significantly offer more accurate and consistent diagnostic classification. Additionally, compared with the dominant parametric methods, NPC method can achieve superior classification stability even for small samples. Overall, this study made a worthwhile attempt to uncover finer-grained diagnostic information at the option level for listening comprehension, but also demonstrated the feasibility of employing the NPC method for cognitive diagnosis with small sample sizes. This is significant implication for individualized teaching, learning and diagnosis in classroom-level context.

Dynamic assessment (DA) is based on Vygostky’s sociocultural theory (SCT) and has served as an alternative to static assessment to diagnose learners’ difficulties and help them to perform beyond their independent functioning and simultaneously promote development (Jitendra & Kameenui, 1993; Poehner, 2008). In this way, assessment and teaching are integrated as a dialectical whole through a set of mediation prompts. Also based on SCT, Concept-based Language Instruction (C-BLI)  developed from Galperin’s Systematic Theoretical Instruction (STI) (1989). With its SCOBAs (Complete Orienting Basis of an Action), C-BI has been successfully applied in grammar instruction of English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese grammar, including modality, tense, aspect and manner. But so far, few L2 studies attempted the comparison of effectiveness of DA and C-BI.  

Russian tense and aspect are the most challenging part for Chinese L2 Russian  learners, especially the nuanced differences among perfective (or imperfective) verbs. The current authors first developed and validated the graduated moves of tense and aspect SCOBAs from C-BI perspectives. Then they are used as mediation prompts to 24 participants in Group 1 (G1) for a 3-week DA procedure. Another 23 participants in Group 2 devised their own SCOBAs after traditional teaching of the related concepts.

The comparative analysis showed that, overall, G2 outperformed G1 in their post-test performance, meaning that SCOBA self-construction process facilitated participants more in conceiving, visualizing and verbalizing scientific concepts involved in L2 Russian tense and aspect. The effect sizes are even more significant in movement verbs. This study is among the first attempts in exploring the effectiveness of two C-BI informed DA methods, and also sheds lights on the integration of the two.

The integration of technology in English writing instruction has opened new avenues for innovative peer-assisted learning strategies. Leveraging (AIGC) technology, English educators seek to cultivate learning environment where students can enjoy multifaceted writing feedback, fostering improvements in vocabulary, sentence construction, organization, content, and coherence in writing. However, Scant attention has been paid to how peer feedback facilitates writing performance in EFL writing. This study is situated within this context, aiming to elucidate the comparative impacts of two automated writing feedback tools, Peerceptiv and ReWriter, on students' writing performance across multiple dimensions. Two groups were recuited to participate and assigned randomly in either Peerceptiv or ReWriter. The finding indicated that Peerceptiv and ReWriter exhibit different efficacies in facilitating peer-assisted writing learning across the above mentioned dimensions. Peerceptiv seems more potent in fostering a rich environment for peer feedback, particularly in enhancing writing structure and content, as it encourages a more comprehensive and interactive peer review process, allowing students to engage deeply with the organizational and developmental aspects of writing. ReWriter’s peer-assisted learning tend to focuse more on the refinement of vocabulary and sentence usage, allowing students to receive and provide feedback specifically targeted at lexical choice and sentence construction, but it is comparatively less conducive to peer interactions concerning broader aspects like essay structure and content. The study is significant for the future design and applicattion of automated peer feedback.

Combining the corpus method, frame analysis, and discourse-historical approach, the present study examined how Western and Japan’s neighboring countries report on Japan’s nuclear water discharge in their media, by taking the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and South Korea as examples. In this article, the news reports from The New York Times, The Independent, China Daily, and The Korea Herald were selected as research objects because they are all highly circulated and influential national newspapers. This study first extracted and compared the topics of different media using the corpus tool Wmatrix 5.0 by comparing the target corpora with the British National Corpus (BNC) Sampler written corpus. Then the framing theory proposed by Entman is employed to discuss different ways of media framing, in terms of problem definition, its causes, remedies, and moral judgments. Thirdly, based on the Discourse Historical Approach of Ruth Wodak, this study investigated the nomination and perspectivization strategies taken by different media to construct their discourses. Finally, based on the social and historical background of Western and neighboring countries, this study deeply explored the legitimate and delegitimate ways of nuclear water discharge by different media.

With the rapid rise of globalization, communication and interaction between different social cultures become common. Thus, people have participated in various intercultural experience activities. College students have been regarded as the subject of learning and experiencing multi-culture, and their ICE has been brought into focus by scholars. However, since the outbreak of COVID-19 hindered cultural and academic exchanges between countries severely, it has been affected accordingly that college students acquire intercultural experience. In terms of the above situation, integrating the quantitative questionnaire survey and the qualitative semi-structured interview, this study constructs the scale of Chinese college students' intercultural experience in the post-pandemic era to explore main factors of Chinese college students' intercultural experience. The key findings of this study are as follows: Chinese college students' intercultural experience is comprised of 6 principal factors, namely academic experience, entertainment experience, cultural and sports activity experience, food and drinking experience, social experience and sensory experience. According to the results of path analysis, it has been found that cultural and sports activity experience is the most important of all 6 principal factors; social experience and entertainment experience are relatively more important; food and drinking experience, academic experience and sensory experience are of general importance. Chinese college students' intercultural experience could be well predicted and explained by the 6 principal factors. Besides, based on the above findings, this study also gives suggestions for colleges reflecting on intercultural foreign language teaching and nailing down key points of intercultural foreign language teaching, and for the education department improving intercultural foreign language education policies in the post-pandemic era according to the result of semi-structured interview.

The Virtual Element Method (VEM) [1] does not require geometry mapping, allowing for arbitrary element shapes, not necessarily convex, free of distortion sensitivity. Thanks to these features, especially the flexibility in element shapes and mesh definition, the VEM is particularly suitable for simulating crack propagation in arbitrary directions through the elements. Following the mixed approach proposed in [2], a linear strain model is adopted to obtain an initially self-stabilized model and a more accurate stress field. 

In this work, a 2D mixed-mode fracture evolution model is established based on the mixed-VEM coupled with cohesive interface elements, considering two different linear strain models. The crack propagation direction is determined based on the maximum principal stress direction. The linear stress field around the crack tip is smoothed across adjacent elements by a patch recovery technique. The crack is allowed to propagate through a Virtual Element (VE) by adding to the element at least one node and two edges (element-split strategy, see e.g. [3]) separated by a cohesive interface element. The non-convex mixed-VE which is obtained in this way requires a specific stabilization. Both mode-I and mixed-mode numerical examples are simulated, allowing cracks to propagate through the VEs. The crack paths and the force -displacements curves obtained with the proposed model, based on the element-split strategy, show good agreement with the experimental results. These examples and results validate the accuracy and computational efficiency, especially in terms of mesh management, of the present VEM-based fracture evolution model.

The propagation of longitudinal ductile fractures in long-distance gas pipelines may lead to catastrophic accidents, which must be avoided as much as possible. Crack arrestors, as an external device, can prevent or at least limit the rapid spread of longitudinal cracks by constraining the external pipelines [1]. Carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials have excellent strength and toughness and are often used to manufacture composite crack arrestors. However, due to the significant variations in composite material performance, clear design criteria for determining the size of crack arrestors have not yet been developed. This study presents a comprehensive design procedure for optimizing the geometrical parameters of composite crack arrestors based on a finite element model of dynamic pipeline fractures under crack arrestor constraints. Pipeline crack propagation is accomplished using the cohesive zone model [2], and composite material failure is defined by Hashin criteria [3]. A series of numerical simulations are conducted to assess the ability of crack arrestors to stop a growing crack in a gas pipeline. Ultimately, the minimum wall thickness and axial length of the effective crack arrestor are determined. The proposed design procedure enables the numerical design of composite material crack arrestors and supports safe pipeline operation.

新型高能(HEDM)推进剂由于含有大量高能粒子,因此能量密度极高。然而,颗粒填充比的提高使得推进剂在制造过程中更容易产生孔隙。这些孔隙代表着初始损伤,是研究推进剂力学性能不可或缺的因素。为了分析初始损伤对HEDM推进剂的影响,本研究从微观和宏观角度分析了此类推进剂的损伤行为。本研究基于μ-CT技术对HEDM推进剂的微观结构和初始损伤进行了表征。随后,基于内聚力模型(CZM),利用代表性体积单元(RVE),模拟了不同初始损伤的HEDM推进剂的微观损伤演化。最后,开发了基于微观损伤的 HEDM 推进剂损伤构成模型。通过用户材料子程序(UMAT)将该损伤构成模型应用到ABAQUS中进行验证,结果表明,损伤构成模型可以有效预测不同初始损伤的 HEDM 推进剂的机械响应。

对于两个不同数据持有者的集合,计算它们交集集合的基数(即不同元素的数量)是网络监控和数据库管理等应用中的基本任务。在海量数据下,为了考虑存储资源、计算和通信的成本,轻量级概率方法(即sketch方法)如Flajolet-Martin(FM)sketch和HyperLogLog(HLL)sketch被广泛应用。然而,当集合的sketch以及用于构建该sketch的哈希函数被披露给不受信任的第三方时,集合中元素的敏感信息有可能暴露。直接应用本地差分隐私(LDP)技术来保护sketch隐私,会导致估计集合交集基数出现极大误差。为了解决这个问题,我们提出了一种新颖的sketch方法,使得更容易将随机扰动噪声融入到构建的sketch中,以实现本地差分隐私。更为重要的是,我们构建的概率模型可以有效地消除噪声对估计结果带来的负面影响。我们在各种合成和真实数据集上进行了大量实验,实验结果表明,我们的方法比现有方法具有更高的精确性,并且速度几倍于现有方法。

空间电荷特性是影响油纸绝缘性能的关键因素,而这与材料的物理处理有关。低温等离子体处理具有改变电学性能的能力。在各种等离子体来源中,DBD等离子体可以在室温和大气压下产生,使其成为在实验室环境中创建非热等离子体的一种相对经济和简单的技术。

在这一阶段的研究中,我主要研究了等离子体处理对油渍纸空间电荷特性的影响。等离子体处理降低了油浸纸的陷阱深度,降低了长期直流电压作用下的电荷积聚量。这项工作概述了初步的发现,并为进一步的研究奠定了基础,以探索等离子体处理在油浸渍纸中引起的物理和化学变化,以及这些变化如何影响其空间电荷特性。

广义零样本学习,旨在通过使用自然语言描述对可见类物体和不可见类物体同时进行识别。具体地,我们使用视觉-语言模型作为骨干模型,对输入的视觉图像和文本描述提取特征,然后设计特定的模块对模型的识别能力进行提升。第一个工作聚焦于提升表征的细粒度表达能力,提出使用一组预定义的属性作为“基向量”对输入特征进行表达,通过增加属性的数量达到控制表征粒度的目的。考虑到自然语言描述可能存在的属性缺失问题,我们还提出一个基于属性掩码的蒸馏预测方案,增强模型对属性变化的鲁棒性。第二个工作聚焦于增强的对不可见类的识别能力,具体包括设计一个拓扑结构保持的约束函数保持的记忆能力,此外,提出双空间表征法增强模型的表达能力。
