Developing Global Citizens: The Role of Experiential Travel in Education

In today’s interconnected world, fostering a sense of global citizenship among students is more crucial than ever. As a company specialising in experiential education travel programs, we have seen first-hand the transformative power of immersive travel experiences. Our service-learning activities in China, particularly our ancient building restoration projects in Huangshan and Songyang, offer a compelling example of how such programs can help students develop into empathetic, informed, and proactive global citizens.

Cultural Immersion and Historical Insight

One of the key components of our programs in Huangshan and Songyang is cultural immersion. Students begin their journey by interacting with local residents, delving into the historical and cultural significance of the ancient buildings they will help restore. This initial phase helps set the stage for a deeper understanding of the community’s heritage and traditions. By engaging with locals, students learn about the historical events, cultural practices, and societal values that have shaped the region.

For instance, in Huangshan, students have the opportunity to explore the history of ancestral shrines, which are central to the local culture. These shrines reflect the community's deep respect for their ancestors and their ongoing effort to maintain their legacy. Through conversations with villagers, students gain an appreciation of the cultural and spiritual importance of these structures.

Learning Ancient Architectural Techniques

After gaining a foundational understanding of the historical context, students are introduced to the technical aspects of restoration work. A local expert guides them through the ancient architectural styles and techniques that were used in constructing the original buildings. By understanding the methods and materials used in the original construction, students are better equipped to contribute meaningfully to the restoration process. Moreover, students are able to gain an appreciation for architecture and an understanding of why it is important to preserve traditional techniques for future generations.

Hands-On Restoration Work

The core of our service-learning projects involves the actual restoration work. Students roll up their sleeves and get involved in tasks such as restoring the floor of a main hall or laying rooftop tiles. These activities require teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience, as students navigate the challenges of manual labor, which they often have very little experience with.

By focusing on specific sections of the building, our team and local partners ensure that the student’s efforts are both manageable and impactful. Despite their short stay, students make tangible contributions to the preservation of these ancient structures. The physical labour involved in restoration work also provides a contrast to students’ usual academic environment, offering a change of pace that students in many cases respond to with enthusiasm.

Insights into Local Culture and Sustainability

Throughout the service-learning project, students gain valuable insights into local life. Engaging with the community and participating in restoration work exposes them to the realities of rural economic conditions. They learn about the challenges and opportunities faced by rural communities, as well as the significance of sustainable tourism in promoting economic development.

In particular, students visiting Huangshan and Songyang are able to observe how the preservation of ancient buildings can attract tourists and generate income for the community. This helps students gain an awareness of the power of sustainable tourism to preserve the region's cultural and historical heritage while also benefiting the local community. By witnessing the direct impact of their work, students develop a sense of responsibility and a commitment to supporting sustainable initiatives.

Fostering Global Citizenship

Experiential education travel programs, such as our service-learning projects in Huangshan and Songyang, are crucial in developing globally aware and responsible individuals. By immersing students in different cultures and involving them in meaningful service, these programs foster empathy, critical thinking, and a commitment to positive change. Hands-on restoration work, guided by local experts, equips students with practical skills and valuable insights, while cultural immersion broadens their perspectives on global issues. These transformative experiences cultivate a new generation of global citizens prepared to navigate and positively impact our interconnected world.
