Manou Gallo 被美国传奇歌手/贝斯手 Bootsy Collins 誉为“非洲的贝斯女王”,《福布斯》杂志(非洲版) 2013 年将其列入“全球十大最具影响力非洲贝斯手”,她是其中唯一的女性。

出生于科特迪瓦西部的小镇迪沃,Manou 8 岁时在一次村庄典礼上展现的过人音乐天赋让村民们为之震惊;13 岁时,她作为一名舞者、歌手和多乐器演奏者,受邀加入科特迪瓦标志性乐队之一 Woya,并在非洲各地进行过长时间的巡演。在乐队里,她遇见了对她而言如父亲一般的导师——音乐家、制作人 Marcellin Yacé,并在他的鼓励和支持下开始学习电贝斯。

1997 年,Manou 来到欧洲,成为了 Marie Daulne 著名的世界音乐乐队 Zap Mama 的贝斯手,开始在欧美顶级的舞台上频频亮相,并随后移居比利时布鲁塞尔。

William Hooker

William Hooker 是一位音乐家、作曲家和诗人,被誉为“打破常规的音乐先锋,其世代中最具创新性的音乐家和鼓手之一”。


他拥有超过 70 张由他领衔的录音作品,涵盖爵士、新音乐、实验音乐和跨领域的艺术形式(包括舞蹈、默片和口头表演艺术等)。他曾在多个知名场馆进行演出,包括布鲁克林音乐学院、林肯中心中庭、沃兹沃思雅典娜博物馆、伊丽莎白女王音乐厅、沃克艺术中心、MTV、Yoshi’s(旧金山)、The Kitchen、The Knitting Factory、ISSUE Project Room、Roulette 和 Real Art Ways 等。他也登上各大国际音乐节的舞台,如 JVC 爵士音乐节、蒙特利尔爵士音乐节、温哥华爵士音乐节、CMJ 音乐节、维尔纽斯爵士音乐节、阿根廷实验音乐节和维多利亚维尔国际当代音乐节等。

Manou Gallo is a Belgian-Ivorian instrumentalist who has been living in Belgium, more precisely in Brussels, for 25 years. 

Multi-instrumentalist, singer and dancer in Woya, one of the emblematic groups of the Ivorian Coast, Manou Gallo has travelled across Africa for long tours. In 1997, upon her arrival in Europe, she became the bassist of Zap Mama, Marie Daulne's band, and performed on the biggest European and American stages. 

Since 2003, she has led her own groups and participated in many other projects (Manou Gallo Women Band, Groove Orchestra, Acoustic Africa and Music Machine). She has also worked with Bootsy Collins, Manu Dibango and Christian Mcbride, with whom she duetted for her new album Afro Bass Fusion

Through her stage presence and incredible technique, she has become one of the leading women of this innovative and appreciated Afro-European music all over the world. She is recognized by her peers as an outstanding bass virtuoso and instrumentalist. She has just received a prize in Benin for the best African instrumentalist 2022. 

In 2023, Manou Gallo released her fifth album Afro Bass Fusion, in which she shares with us a rhythmic journey through Africa between Nigerian afrobeat, Zairean rumba, Cameroonian Makossa and African salsa. She juggles with Abodan and polyrhythmic rhythms from the Ivorian Coast, jazz fusion, funk, urban music and rap. Manou Gallo puts her bass at the center of this album. The rhythms and melody of the sound of her bass rock all along. It pays tribute to musicians who inspired her such as Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, Franco Luambo, Aïcha Kone, Soro N'Gana or Marcellin Yacé.

William Hooker is a musician, composer and a poet recognized as “an iconoclast, and one of the most innovative musicians and drummers of his generation”.


With over 70 recordings as a leader—encompassing jazz, new music, experimental music and multi-disciplinary forms of expression (including dance, silent film and spoken word), he has presented his work at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Atrium at Lincoln Center, Wadsworth Atheneum, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Walker Art Center, MTV, Yoshi's(SF), The Kitchen, The Knitting Factory, ISSUE Project Room, Roulette, and Real Art Ways. He has also presented his work at the JVC Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, CMJ Music Festival, Vilnius Jazz Festival, Experimenta Argentina, and the Victoriaville Music Festival.


William Hooker has received commissions and support from the New York State Council on the Arts, Meet the Composer, Tokio Marine Insurance Company and colleges and universities such as Oberlin, Fordham, Columbia, New York University, Boston University, Princeton, Dartmouth and many more. Musicians he has collaborated with include Billy Bang, David Ware, William Parker, Thurston Moore, David Soldier, Roy Campbell, DJ Spooky, Steven Bernstein, Zeena Parkins, Lee Ranaldo, Jason Hwang, Sabir Mateen, Elliot Sharp, David Murray, Ted Daniel, JD Parren and many more.


The critical acclaim of his most recent album, Symphonie of Flowers (ORG), and the performances in support of it are overwhelming. Some of his earlier recordings have been reissued recently, including his 1977 debut, ... Is Eternal Life and 1997’s Mindfulness (ORG).


Hooker also has his own podcast called “The Lost Generation: Outside the Mainstream”, an interview series devoted to the free-jazz musicians of the present. He’s now at work on his book as a companion piece to the full-length documentary film just completed.




John King, composer, guitarist and violist, has received commissions from the Kronos Quartet; Ethel; the Albany Symphony/“Dogs of Desire”, Bang On A Can All-Stars; Mannheim Ballet; New York City Ballet/Diamond Project, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballets de Monte Carlo; as well as the Merce Cunningham Dance Co. His string quartets have also been performed by the Eclipse Quartet (LA) and the Mondriaan Quartet (Amsterdam), in addition to the Secret Quartet which has premiered many of his compositions at The Stone (June 2007, May 2015), The Kitchen (April 2009), Lincoln Center Festival (July 2011); and Roulette (Oct. 2014).


He has written 7 operas: ping and WHAT IS THE WORD, with texts by Samuel Beckett, premiered at the Experiments in Opera Festival, spring 2014 and the Avant Music Festival, February 2016; impropera, which used randomly selected text msg’s from the singers’ cell phones; SapphOpera, a chamber opera with text-fragments by Sappho translated by Anne Carson; herzstück/heartpiece, based on the text of Heiner Müller, premiered at the 1999 Warsaw Autumn Festival and presented at the Kitchen NYC in 2000 (a double-opera, co-written with Krzysztof Knittel); la belle captive, based on texts by Alain Robbe-Grillet, premiered at Teatro Colon/CETC in Buenos Aires in 2003, and toured to London’s ICA (Fronteras Festival) in 2004 and The Kitchen in 2005; and also his most recent opera, Dice Thrown, based on the Stéphane Mallarmé poem, an excerpt of which was performed by New York City Opera as part of its VOX series in May 2008. The complete staged version was presented at CalArts April 23-24, 2010. And in May of 2015, Piano Vectors, which was created for 6 grand pianos in a large space, premiered at the beautiful 40,000 sq. ft Knockdown Center space in Queens, NY.


He has written songs and incidental music for five plays (The Tempest, Faust, The Trial, Steppenwolf and Wings of Desire) at the Ludwigburg TheaterSommer directed by Peter Kratz. He has been commissioned numerous times by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and collaborated with them on their “Black Mountain Songs” project, which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Nov. 20, 2014 and went on to tour in Europe.


He has 3 recent CD releases of music for string quartet: 10 Mysteries and AllSteel (Tzadik); and Ethel (Cantaloupe). He was Music Curator at The Kitchen from 1999-2003 and from 2002-2011 was a co-director of the Music Committee at MCDC. He received the 2014 Award for Sound/Music from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and is also the recipient of the 2009 Alpert Award in the Arts for Music. He has been a Rockefeller Foundation/Bellagio Center Fellow in March 2016, as well as in residence at the Emily Harvey Foundation in Venice, Italy in July 2015.
