For those who are interested in experimental music and sound art, the name Senyawa is no stranger. This music group from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, was formed by Rully Shabara and Wukir Suyadi in 2010. The word Senyawa has different meanings in Indonesian; It can mean a compound or it can symbolize becoming a soul. Just like their name: the voice of lead singer Rully and the bamboo instrument of performer Wukir produce a chemical reaction, combining elements of Javanese folk music with improvisation, extreme vocal style, and heavy atmosphere, and has won unanimous praise worldwide.

Their work combines throat singing and other avant-garde vocal techniques, doom metal’s subterranean roar, and the clang and drone of industrial “modern primitive” acts. It’s an unearthly sound that is at the same time deeply rooted in nature. The combination of crushingly heavy music and almost liturgical chanting is immersive, and grows when you are inside.
Among them, Wukir Suryadi, who made his own instrument, is a famous instrument maker. His most famous creation is made of a long bamboo with steel strings tied on top. Its function and appearance are similar to the concept of electric guitar. After passing through different effects, the timbre of the instrument itself is changed and amplified. Such sound can create a huge sound field. Wukir's performance has the spatial sense of traditional Javanese music. With Rully's live singing, the listeners seem to enter the other dimension of the voodoo world.
