1. Could you please introduce yourself?

My name is Zhang Wenping. I graduated from Wuhan University of Technology. To become a seafarer, I always say it was a coincidence. I come from an inland city in China, which is quite far from the sea. Before entering university, I had no idea what it was like to be a seafarer. However, my education introduced me to this field, which sparked my interest and dreams.

Initially, my goal was very simple: TO SEE THE WORLD. So, after completing my education, I applied for CSM’s Deck Cadet through SINGHAI MARINE. In 2014, I became a DC on the ship AAL Kembla. The most interesting and surprising thing was that this ship was specially designed for Cadets. It was equipped with a classroom for training eight Cadets. We had a dedicated Training Officer on board who was our mentor and trainer, exclusively for Cadets. This allowed us to have systematic training in all aspects to become competent and qualified officers.

Because of this fortunate opportunity, I have always believed it gave me a very good and lucky start at CSM.

2. Please introduce the heavy-lift vessel you are currently on. What is the primary purpose of this type of vessel? How does it differ from other ship types?

I am now a Chief Officer in CSM's AAL Fleet. Our ships usually carry out loading, securing, transporting, and discharging multi-type cargo. From my personal perspective, we can handle all types of dry cargo, regardless of their dimensions. Such type of cargoes like Containers, Bulk cargoes, General cargoes, Project cargoes, Yachts, Big barges, Windmills, Big tugboats, Timber and logs, and vessel can lift up the cargo quantity up to 700T by ship`s crane. Let's say it is a vessel of several types. ALL IN ONE. And all these different types of cargo can be transported simultaneously — bulk cargo and logs in the hatches, and containers, yachts, general cargo, windmills, and project cargo on deck. All operations can be carried out by the ship's crew and cranes. This is also the biggest difference between our vessel and all other single-type vessels.

3. Having worked at CSM for five years, in what ways have you experienced the feeling of being part of the "CSM Family"?

CSM is one of the top 10 shipping management companies in the world, and we have to believe there is a reason for being in this position. To maintain this good reputation, the company is also aware that the crew is key. This is why the company is always very caring about the crew's well-being, ensuring that each of us feels like part of a family. Such care includes: all ships are equipped with internet to let the crew have a good connection with anyone they want; for the crew's physical health, a gym room is an important part that cannot be omitted; besides physical health, mental health is also a very important part of our lives, so the company has a free hotline for anyone to relieve their mental stress. Of course, MCTC, one of the company's cooperative companies, makes sure all of us have good and healthy food daily. As a member of the CSM family, I do feel that the company considers all of us as family, so "icare" is between each of us — you care for the family, and the family cares about you.

4. When managing your team offshore, how do you embody the CSM’s icare "diversity and inclusivity"?

RESPECT! We have a multi-national crew on board; there was a time when I had a crew of nine different nationalities, and most of the time, we have to face at least three or four different nationalities. From these multi-national crews, we can already embody the company's icare values of diversity and inclusivity. So, what we should do is RESPECT! "Respect their culture, their habits."

5. For Chinese seafarers who aspire to join CSM, what advice would you give?

For those who want to join us as a member of the CSM family, I would like to say: you should know exactly what you want. What is your initial goal in joining this company? There are many shipping companies, and I believe they all have their own special aspects that attract people to join. Additionally, practice your English, as we all know that CSM is a multi-national crew company, and communication is one of the important parts of being a member of this family. In the end, be positive. YOU WILL BE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME.
