Hihi! Today was a much anticipated day amongst the group. In the morning, we split up into two groups — A (hiking) and B (non-hiking). Helena led group A to trek up the Ahxia Valley, where Vania led group B to the “Walking Marriage Bridge”.

Let’s start off with the boisterous B group! After walking across the “Walking Marriage Bridge” and taking some photos, they went to this big food court nearby. Despite finishing an hour before A group, they kindly waited for us at the restaurant.

And now the amazing A group! It was a hike up the Ahxia Valley in the natural canyon formed by the deep mountains and the origin of the water source.

The hike was not easy: the log bridges were covered in slippery moss, and some paths were covered by wet leaves.

However, this did not waver our dedication to climb up! From going on all fours to climb up the log bridge to holding each others’ hands while going down the mountain, we all safely and satisfactorily arrived back down and prayed to the mountain goddess for keeping us safe.

Through this experience, we not only deepened our connection with nature, but also better understood how the Mosuo people viewed their connection with nature.

I was also very impressed by how the kids took care of each other and the people at the back of the hike, reminding us that there’s a spiky tree or a loose rock.

Mother Nature truly is so beautiful!

After the tiring but extremely rewarding hike, both groups reconvened at a stone pot chicken soup place for lunch. We sure were blessed, as whilst eating, it began to pour outside.

After a soul-healing lunch, the kids headed off to the museum to have class with the Mosuo children summer camp (organised by the museum as a charity program to bolster their cultural education and the children’s understanding of health). Each kid was assigned a leadership role to communicate with the Mosuo children and take care of each other.

On the other hand, the big kid group (including Vania and Helena) had a little eMule/eDonkey party along the lake and up the mountain. We ended up in another breathtakingly beautiful village and then headed back to not stride off too far. As half of the roads during the journey were unevenly bumpy, it felt like, quoting Vania, “we’re experiencing a concussion”.

We then gathered together at their special Mosuo beef hotpot place. Perhaps it was because of the fulfilling day, but we all ate so much that we swore we wouldn’t eat again (although we said this after each meal, we never did as the food was just way too good).

To end the day on a high note, we went to the museum to watch an award-winning documentary called “I am Mosuo”. Both big and lil kids asked some great questions, ranging from the future of the Mosuo children in a developing modern world, to whether the structure of matriarchy is better for our society.

Arriving back at our stay, the kids finished their Tangka drawings exceptionally! After relaxing our muscles, we then headed off to one of the best sleeps of this journey!
