Welcome to “Explore Mosuo: Youthful Impressions of Mosuo Culture"—an immersive photographic and artistic exhibition showcasing the talents of nine young (and old) photographers who have ventured deep into the heart of the Mosuo culture at Lugu Lake, Yunnan this summer. Their journey, documented through 54 breathtaking photographs and 5 hand-drawn TangKa 唐卡 illustrations, offers a profound glimpse into the lives, traditions, and beauty of this rich, ancient culture.

Through their lenses, these young photographers capture the ethereal beauty of Lugu Lake, where still waters reflect snow-capped peaks and whispers of nature weave through mountain mists. Their photographs delve into the rhythms of Mosuo daily life—where matriarchal traditions continue to thrive, and the balance between nature and community reveals itself in every image. Themes of serenity, resilience, and a deep connection to the earth permeate these works, offering viewers an intimate encounter with the culture’s strong sense of identity. The addition of the hand-drawn TangKa 唐卡 drawings by the five young creators further enriches the exhibition, offering a unique exploration of spiritual symbolism and artistry that underscores the Mosuo people’s devotion to their spiritual heritage.

The Mosuo culture, often referred to as one of the last remaining matriarchal societies in the world, is centered around women as the heads of households and primary decision-makers. The Mosuo people, who live near Lugu Lake, have maintained their traditional customs for centuries. Central to their way of life is the concept of "walking marriages," a unique practice in which couples maintain fluid relationships without formal marriage bonds. The lake itself is considered sacred, a symbol of life, continuity, and spiritual sustenance. The TangKa drawings created by the children reflect this profound spirituality, depicting Buddhist iconography and Mosuo symbolism, carrying with them centuries of wisdom and artistry. This rich cultural heritage, expressed through intricate, vibrant designs, mirrors the beauty and depth of Lugu Lake and the people who live along its shores.

This exhibition is organized by World Origin Youth Power, a group dedicated to preserving the world's ethnic cultures and art. Founded in 2017 by Vania 葡萄 and co-founded by Helena 石榴 and Angelina 樱桃, our mission is to slow down the fading of these rich heritages by empowering youth. Since our inception, we have worked closely with the Mosuo community, starting with our first cultural classroom in HuiYuanWan Elementary School. Our efforts aim to foster cultural continuity by creating positive learning environments, strengthening teachers' knowledge of Mosuo traditions, and enhancing global cultural awareness.

Through this exhibition, we not only highlight the talents of these young photographers and artists but also reaffirm our commitment to preserving and promoting the Mosuo culture for future generations. We invite you to embark on this journey with us—exploring, appreciating, and helping to sustain the incredible legacy of the Mosuo people.

Let the visions of these young creators inspire you as they have inspired us!

Special thanks to Enjoy Art Museum, Roundabout, and World Monument Fund for your support <3
