Timeless Here and Now.

B Residence

B Residence offers an architectural experience where its inhabitants find harmony with nature. This home embodies peace and elegance, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Designed as a private haven, it is the perfect family retreat, exuding timeless sophistication.

Situated on a sloping plot, the mansion presents two distinct facades. The north side is introverted and horizontal, with plastered brick volumes and expansive windows beneath the eave line. In contrast, the south side showcases soaring double heights, featuring terraces made of black terracotta bricks sheltered by generous roof overhangs.

As the morphological context of the land – a natural hilly and wooded landscape – instilled a vertical flow to the program, VVDA sought harmony between the building and its surroundings, achieved by accentuating the horizontal lines of the terraces and the overhangs of the roofs, a wholesome element with the environment.  Superfluous elements were eliminated.

The idea was to bring the foundation above ground level, creating habitable surfaces such as terraces and imparting them the resemblance of a low masonry platform on which the building stands.  As a result, the basement doubles as a plinth to the level above.

The open plan is based on the concept of eliminating partition walls and avoiding rooms as enclosed spaces.  Large continuous volumes, articulated through simple architectural artifices, create a circumscribed environment: Air, light and views permeate every ambient with a sense of unity, preserving only minor subdivisions.

Loose furniture, incorporated within the architecture, becomes part of the building, as if a small project within a bigger macrocosm.  Functional to the purpose of the house and integrating with the surroundings in materials and forms, the living room features solid natural wood blocks as an additional connecting element.

Within the elevation, the walls of the house are conceived as screens;  they rise directly from the ground, while the windows line up as a continuous band below the eaves.  Window compartments are protected from the elements (wind, sun, rain) by wide eave overhangs, a tectonic expression of architectural volumes, timeless where the careful composition of volumes is combined with the tactility of surfaces.

CASA M

Photos by Ricardo Labougle and Vincent Van Duysen

Casa M was a labor of love that took over three years to build in Melides, Portugal. Sought to create an enduring monument to design – a sculptural oeuvre camouflaged by the rolling hills, dunes and cork trees of Alentejo, south of Lisbon. With an exterior of exposed aggregate tinted a bone hue to vanish into its sandy surroundings, the compound achieves the opposite effect of its Brutalist forebears, which tended to overpower the landscape. The house is meant to take in the elements – sand, light, wind, sun, air, fog and the Ocean in the distance – with a non-ornamental attitude letting the sculptural, umbrella-like canopies of marine pines be the center of attention. Sunrise and sunset here dictate the palette of colors and moods, while the structure casts shadows on the walls and on the bare soil as light shifts.

Drawing inspiration from iconic concrete residential structures by modernist masters such as Can Lis in Mallorca by Jørn Utzon, Casa Luis Barragán and Georgia O’Keefe’s Ghost Ranch, even Casa Malaparte in Capri, the ethereal, unobtrusive structure disappears into the surrounding forest dunes. Embodying Van Duysen’s stylistic aesthetics, the poured-on-site concrete volumes represent the purest expression of the texture-obsessed, materials-driven strain of warm brutalism that has defined the studio work for more than three decades.

Van Duysen’s search for stripped-down essentialism translates into a bare-bone structural language and space. As Van Duyen sees it, it’s a shrine, a sanctuary, a domus in which he feels protected yet inspired, lulled by an unspoiled vegetation, so typical of the area. It’s an argument for eliminating noise and clutter from one’s life, to receding into the natural environment.

The concept of domestic hearth was key in envisioning the plan, whose fulcrum – a central living space featuring a cubist fireplace, opens up onto a courtyard characterized by a sort of Hellenic rhythm and balance set by concrete pillars. Casa M’s wings close onto an open space overlooking the mesmerizing natural landscape composed of green pines and vast expanses of rice patties. It’s an open, shaded pavilion in the summer; a shelter in the winter.

Casa M’s architectural core is in a continuous dialogue with the outside where sand is allowed to be part of the house itself, blurring the distinctions between indoor and outdoor. The interiors, rendered in Brazilian ipe wood, brown terracotta tiles in a nod to the Portuguese tradition, and sparse furniture, reinforce how the warm Brutalist monolith is hard at its core but soft and welcoming in character. The colors of concrete and cork trees are actually reprised inside with each detail, from the wooden ceilings to fixtures and panels, all the way to custom-made furnishings. In the living quarters, a 11.8-meter glass sliding door, disappearing into the walls, opens onto the central columned space, riad-like, horizon and Ocean in the distance, only a little farther to grab.

Winery VV by Vinetiq

Photos by Koen Van Damme

Inspired by the atypical nature of the brief, Winery VV is a project that derives its individuality from its place and architecture. Located in the middle of the beautiful rural area of Flanders, old asparagus fields made place for the Valke Vleug Winery in Puurs, covering a vineyard of 17 000 vines. Respecting the Flemish tradition, VVDA embedded the project in the existing landscape paying homage to the old agricultural buildings in the rural area of Klein Brabant. The project takes its name from the Valke Loop.

The design approach reflects the concept of a traditional Flemish farmhouse, which forms an integral part of the rural heritage. By implementing volumes that forms a hierarchy in the existing open landscape, we have responded to the present horizontality and created a dialogue with the surrounding landscape. The main multipurpose building, the outbuildings for agricultural utilities and the house create a clear border around the courtyard – the heart of the winery - but the open side permits a connectedness to the surrounding nature.

Once entering the central courtyard through the passage of the main building, the viewer is alert to the coherence of the space and its configuration. A central courtyard covering in lava stone is formed, blurring the boundaries within the surrounding greenery. Protected by the functional buildings and monolithic concrete walls, the view opens up onto the vineyards, providing misty landscapes, sunrises, sunsets and the views on the undeveloped landscape. The main building houses among others an area for the production of wine and a wine tasting space. The large sliding windows of the tasting area with its floor continuation blends in the extend of the outdoor terrace and the view on the landscape.

The main common factor of asparagus cultivation and viticulture is that both require linear plantings and ensure a horizontal image in the landscape. A tight flattened line in the landscape is present due to the uniform height of the vines and the long volume of the different barns. The horizontal character is interrupted by a dark wooden volume bringing verticality into the hierarchy of the different components. This results in a residence with a specific appearance and thus establishes a link with the stately connotations of a vineyard. The position of the old oak on the property provides a counterweight to the residential tower, providing shade to the horse slope and serving as a beacon for the vineyard.

A thorough approach with regard to details and purity of the materials strengthens the contemporary character of the architectural language. The foundation of the buildings is the brown-grey colour of the concrete which blends into the present earth tones. These elements provide a visual continuation between the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating blurred boundaries into the landscape. Making reference to the old barns, the dark wood contrasts with the landscape along with the use of the concrete.

This palette of concrete, dark wood and lava stone is tempered by the surroundings – the green of the poplars and willow trees, the vines and the water feature. From a distance the abstraction of the volumes is complete – but coming closer these shelter VVDA’s first cool climate winery.

VO Residence

Photos by Hélène Binet and François Halard

Knokke, a Belgian seaside village, is known for its refined white holiday homes with gabled roofs. Situated alongside the Royal Golf Course, this permanent home for the owner and his family allows beautiful wide views across the golf course and onto its protected private gardens, designed by Martin Wirtz.

Large, whitewashed brick volumes – positioned simply within the natural green landscape – support a large thatched roof. These primary architectural elements define the strong and modern character and expression of the house, which is an interpretation of the archetypal traditional villa in Knokke.

The massive monolithic brick volumes arrange the house spatially and functionally. It is sometimes open to its environment with vistas to the green all around, or protected when positioned between, behind or within the massive brickwork volumes. The cement-washed bone-coloured finish links the exterior with the interior.

The minimal windows strengthen the continuity between indoors and out. The large thatched roof gives a protected and introverted feel, and provides privacy for the inhabitants. Without any gutters or roof ridges, and with its low-hanging roof edges, the large abstract roof adds to the contemporary character of the house. The two large chimneys – reminiscent of the open fires and chimneys of old mansions – create a play of verticality against the horizontal lines of the roof and the pool house extension.

The architecture is completed with the terraces, an outdoor swimming pool and adjacent poolhouse, to enable the owner to enjoy different views of the surroundings while taking advantage of optimal sun orientation. The terraces create open or semi-enclosed seating areas to both the north and south sides of the house to bring the outdoor landscape closer to, or almost into the house.

The interior materials are finely detailed and elegant, sophisticated and in contrast to the raw expression of the thatched roof and the cement-washed brickwork textures applied all over the exterior and some of the interior walls.

Depending on the desired mood, the different interior finishes bring variation within the bounds of a similar design approach and atmosphere. The dark wooden double-height ceiling in the grand living room contrasts with the natural-wood clad kitchen with its lower ceiling. Meanwhile the leather and ‘vegetal’ wallpaper finish of the home office and master bedroom relate to the softer and more intimate feel of these private areas. The green mosaic for the home spa adds to the essential and quiet experience of relaxing in this space. The custom-made furniture and interior decor further add to the sophisticated atmosphere, reminiscent of the grand holiday homes of the past.
