Florence: Hello. I'm Florence, one of the RNs on duty today. Can you tell me why you came to the emergency department?
Patient: I had an accident at home. Now I've got terrible back pain.
Florence: I see. Can you tell me what happened?
Patient: I rushed into the next room because my son was crying. I tripped over a toy car and landed on my back.
Florence: Where does it hurt the most?
Patient: It's most painful in my lower back.
Florence: What's the pain like?
Patient: What do you mean?
Florence: Is it a sharp pain or a dull ache?
Patient: It's a sharp pain. It's more painful when I move around.
Florence: How would you rate your pain on a scale between zero and ten? Zero is no pain at all; ten is severe pain.
Patient: I'm not sure. It's very painful.
Florence: 1 to 3 is mild pain; 4 to 6 is moderate pain - the pain makes it difficult for you to concentrate.
Patient:It's worse than that.
Florence: Seven to nine is strong pain. 10 is the worst pain you have ever had.
Patient: I understand now. The pain is an 8.
Florence: So, you have a sharp pain in your lower back after an injury at home, you rate the pain as an 8? That's correct?
Patient: Yes, that's right.
