WUYI ROAD

A little west of the city centre, Wuyi Road was once a sleepy street, but is now worth repeat visits for eating out! Curiously, there seems to be a concentration of South Korean-run concepts there, from one casual fine dining restaurant to a homey bakery.

Whether you’re seeking a weekend brunch with the crew or a sophisticated dinner, Wuyi Road has something to offer every taste and budget. You can hardly go wrong with the following!

🚇 Closest metro stations

If the cinnamon rolls here look and taste somewhat familiar, it’s not just you... Here’s the tea: rumour has it the team jumped ship from another bakery that’s well known for its cinnamon rolls.

Located in the new WYSH complex, Glory Butter serves a standout selection of pastries as well as à la carte options for lunch and dinner.

The pastries are of course, amazing, but the cooked-to-order offerings deserve special mention — try the Croque Madame, elevated with duck confit, gruyere cheese and a fried egg, or the Black Truffle Gnocchi for the ultimate mid-day indulgence.

Unsurprisingly, Glory Butter’s classic cinnamon roll as well as the creative takes on it are fan favourites. The croissants and Napoleon tarts come highly recommended as well.

+ Cinnamon Rolls

+ Croque Madame

+ Croissants

+ Napoleon Tarts

L’Atelier Over Bakery

📍Shop 04, 152 Lixi Road, Changning

⏰ Daily, 10 AM – 6 PM

So good that we have to make an exception for it, L’Atelier Over Bakery is located on mere steps away from Wuyi Road — Lixi Road is so small it’s practically a lane.

The bakery is leading the game when it comes to top-quality and creative sourdough bread.

The bakery went viral for its ‘Bread Omakase,’ a carefully-curated, special selection of bread, compound butter and sides. Slots are released on their WeChat mini programme every Sunday.

There are only eight portions of the bread omakase every day — no wonder they get snapped up almost immediately — and three time slots to enjoy it.

But don’t get too hung up on missing out on the experience: L’Atelier Over Bakery’s other offerings are not to be missed!

The newest café on the block, Wekuum is a South Korean-style home bakery and café opened by a native baker. Its homey décor and bright, cosy interior are as inviting as the buttery scent of baking that greets you.

The cafe’s star pastry is its financier, a small French cake resembling a gold bar. ‘Kuum’ is a Korean homophone for ‘gold,’ and hence a reference to the financiers.

These buttery little treats are made with burnt butter, egg whites, flour and sugar, but Wekuum balances out its traditionally sweet flavours with savoury elements such as blue cheese, meat floss and spicy almonds. And with daily specials on the board every day, there’s bound to be a financier for every palate.

Wekuum’s financiers can be enjoyed onsite, delivered, or preordered as gift boxes for special events or occasions.

WULI is the realisation of Ryu’s dream to open a classic South Korean restaurant in Shanghai. Expect sharing-style plates that mirror family-style dishes in Korea.

A must-try here is the ‘Abalone Juk,’ Korean-style rice porridge infused with the delicate taste of abalone, and with the pleasant hum of salty seawater in every bite.

We also like the Jeju Hairtail Sotbap. Native to Jeju lsland, the fish’s soft flesh nicely contrasts the crispy rice guoba at the bottom of the stone pot, making for a delicious and texturally satisfying experience.

The house-crafted cocktails containing Korean liquor and spirits are also not to be missed.
