There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation may never come again.

Hello my name's Stephen Fry and I was at Queens' from '78 to '81. A very long time ago, but not  in the history of a very old college, a college I always felt large enough for one to be able  to lose oneself and small enough for there to be a genuine sense of specialness and family, I'll almost say.

One recognizes one's fellow Queens' people everywhere and we all feel, I think, that we shared something rather special within Cambridge. There are many colleges and they all have different characters and histories and so forth.

While Queens' is perhaps one of the most beautiful of all the colleges, I say this and I kind of mean it, that were it a brutalist 1960s series of breeze blocks and drippy concrete but with the same people and the same ethos, I would be quite happy to go there because that's what you take away with you.

And through the recent years I've had the honour of being an Honorary Fellow of the college. Nobody, as far as I can tell, who runs the college , none of the Fellows,  nor the President himself have any wish other than for Queens' to be filled with people from all over Britain and indeed the world who, regardless of their backgrounds, have something to offer and  will be given something to offer by the College.

It's a warm, friendly, welcoming place. It has  room for for growth and that's what I found. I look back on my time at Queens' and I realise that when I arrived, I was a confused and weird and frightened person convinced that everybody around  me was smarter and had had access to some sort of lesson in how to live that I had never had.

But I discovered that I could find ways to express and fulfill myself and I was given permission,  as it were, to live as myself. The academic work, yes it was important, but it was part  of a whole package and that's what makes Queens' very, very special.

If you're an alumnus like me,  or an alumna, then I urge you. Like a grand and miraculous spaceship, our planet has sailed through the universe of time. And for a brief moment, we have been among its many passengers. From the very beginning, we have always sought to reach out to one another. To bridge the gaps between us. To communicate.

I’m choosing to talk about Marie Colvin, who I play in a film A Private War. Marie was an incredibly brave and intrepid war correspondent. She went to the kind of places that you and I would run away as hard as we could in the opposite direction.

Marie got me in touch with my own fear and my own courage. She spent time talk to people. Empathy was her great weapon and her great asset. And I feel that there’s a crossover between that and what I do.

Empathy is the great misunderstood, undervalued human quality. What’s interesting when looking for a hero is you know, sure they can be strong, they can be brilliant, they can be fierce in the pursuit of what they want.

Marie was not fearless. There’s a lot of things and a lot of talk about the fearless and correspondent. Marie was not fearless. She had tremendous fear and she overcame that fear of her conviction in what was doing.

★ 蝴蝶梦 ★

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me. There was a padlock and? chain upon the gate.

昨晚,我梦见自己又回到了曼陀丽庄园。恍惚中,我站在那扇通往车道的大铁门前,好一会儿被挡在门外进不去。铁门上挂着把大锁,还系了根铁链。


I called in my dream to the lodge-keeper, and had no answer, and peering closer through the rusted spokes of the gate I saw that the lodge was uninhabited.

我在梦里大声叫唤看门人,却没人答应。于是我就凑近身子,隔着门上生锈的铁条朝里张望,这才明白曼陀丽已是座阒寂无人的空宅。


No smoke came from the chimney, and the little lattice windows gaped forlorn. Then, like all dreamers, I was possessed of a sudden with supernatural powers and passed like a spirit through the barrier before me.

烟囱不再飘起袅袅青烟。一扇扇小花格窗凄凉地洞开着。这时,我突然像所有的梦中人一样,不知从哪儿获得了超自然的神力,幽灵般飘过面前的障碍物。


The drive wound away in front of me, twisting and turning as it had always done, but as I advanced I was aware that a change had come upon it; it was narrow and unkempt, not the drive that we had known.

At first I was puzzled and did not understand, and it was only when I bent my head to avoid the low swinging branch of a tree that I realized what had happened.

Nature had come into her own again and, little by little, in her stealthy, insidious way had encroached upon the drive with long, tenacious fingers.

The woods, always a menace even in the past, had triumphed in the end. They crowded, dark and uncontrolled, to the borders of the drive.

The beeches with white, naked limbs leant close to one another, their branches intermingled in a strange embrace, making a vault above my head like the archway of a church.

And there were other trees as well, trees that I did not recognize, squat oaks and tortured elms that straggled cheek by jowl with the beeches, and had thrust themselves out of the quiet earth, along with monster shrubs and plants, none of which I remembered.

这里还长有许多别的树木,有些我叫不出名字,还有些低矮的橡树和翘曲的榆树,都同榉树盘根错节地纠结在一起。橡树、榆树,还有巨怪似的灌木丛以及其他一些草木,就这么纷列在这块静谧的土地上,全然不是我记忆中的景象。


The drive was a ribbon now, a thread of its former self, with gravel surface gone, and choked with grass and moss. The trees had thrown out low branches, making an impediment to progress; the gnarled roots looked like skeleton claws.

车道已变成一条细带,与过去比,简直成了一根线!路面的沙砾层已不知去向,只见密密的一片杂草和青苔。树枝倒垂下来,阻挡着我的去路,节瘤毕露的根部活像骷髅的魔爪。


Scattered here and again amongst this jungle growth I would recognize shrubs that had been landmarks in our time, things of culture and grace, hydrangeas whose blue heads had been famous.

在这片荒凉芜秽的林莽中间,时而也还能认出一些灌木丛,那是当年我们居住时的标志,是人工栽培和雅趣的产物。如紫阳,它的花穗曾经颇负盛名。


No hand had checked their progress, and they had gone native now, rearing to monster height without a bloom, black and ugly as the nameless parasites that grew beside them.

On and on, now east now west, wound the poor thread that once had been our drive. Sometimes I thought it lost, but it appeared again, beneath a fallen tree perhaps, or struggling on the other side of a muddied ditch created by the winter rains.

I had not thought the way so long. Surely the miles had multiplied, even as the trees had done, and this path led but to a labyrinth, some choked wilderness, and not to the house at all.

我从未觉得道儿竟这么长,那距离想必是不断成倍延伸,就像树木成倍往高处长去一样。车道似乎根本不通向宅子,而是引入一片迷津,通向一片混饨杂乱的荒野。


I came upon it suddenly; the approach masked by the unnatural growth of a vast shrub that spread in all directions, and I stood, my heart thumping in my breast, the strange prick of tears behind my eyes.

There was Manderley, our Manderley, secretive and silent as it had always been, the grey stone shining in the moonlight of my dream, the mullioned windows reflecting the green lawns and the terrace. Time could not wreck the perfect symmetry of those walls, nor the site itself, a jewel in the hollow of a hand.

I thought about a hamster. I thought about a mouse. But I want a pet much bigger, more the size of, well, a house.

I really want a giant pet, enormous, big and strong, with a body broad and solid, and a tail that's super long.

我真的很想要一只大宠物,超级大只且强壮。还有一个宽大且结实的身体加上一个超长尾巴。


Oh, if I had a dinosaur, I'd teach him lots of tricks, like how to roll and how to sit and fetch and carry sticks.

啊,如果我有一只恐龙,我会教他很多技巧,例如怎么翻滚、坐下或把树枝咬起来?


If I had a dinosaur, I'd walk him in the park. I wonder if my dinosaur would roar? Or would it bark?

如果我有一只恐龙,我要带它去公园。我好奇它会怒吼或大叫吗?


If I had a dinosaur, he'd carry me to school and all my friends would shout, ‘Oh wow! Your dinosaur is cool.

My dinosaur would learn to count and say the alphabet...and all the teachers would declare, ‘Why a clever pet!’

Dinosaurs need water(I think they like to swim), I'd have to dig a massive pond and fill it to the brim.

If I had a dinosaur, I'd feed him lots of greens, like cabbages broccoli to keep him full of beans!

Dinosaurs that makes mashing pets, as dinosaurs can do much better stuff than dogs or cats. Just watch out for the poo...

If I had a dinosaur, I'd get a ‘dino-flap’, so he could come inside my house and take a little nap.

Our sofa is enormous, it's big enough for four. Just perfect for a sleepy sort of friendly dinosaur.

我们家的沙发超级大,足够坐下四个人。对于想睡觉又有点友善的恐龙是最适合不过了。


I wish I had a dinosaur to cuddle up at night, to read a bedtime story with and give my dad a fright!

我希望我有一只恐龙,可以让我在晚上的时候抱抱它,一起念睡前故事,还有吓我爸一跳!


Yes, dinosaurs make awesome pets, I'm sure you will agree that of all the pets they are the best - just get one and you'll see!

★ 你能保守秘密吗 ★

Hello, I'm Stephen, and I'm here to tell you a bedtime story. And this is the story of a little girl called Winnie, who discovers that fantastic beasts might be more than just make-believe. It's called Can You Keep a Secret? And it was written and illustrated by Melissa Castrillon.

你们好,我是史蒂芬,今天我要给你们讲一个睡前故事。故事里一个叫温妮的小女孩,她发现神奇动物并不都是虚构的。故事叫做《你能保守秘密吗?》,作者和插画师都是梅丽莎·卡斯特隆。


There's a huge tapestry in Winnie's house. It's very old, as old as the town that she lives in. It tells the tale of the fearsome beasts that used to live in the woods all around. Winnie touched the sharp teeth of the dragon.

温妮的房子里有一幅巨大的挂毯。它非常古老,和她住的小镇一样古老。挂毯上讲的是曾经生活在附近森林里可怕的野兽的故事。温妮摸了摸挂毯上龙锋利的牙齿。


“Do you think that they'll ever come back?” she asked. “No.” said her parents. "Our grandparents fought a great battle and now they're gone."

“你觉得它们还会回来吗?”温妮问道。“不会的。”她爸爸妈妈说,“我们的祖父们和野兽们打了一仗,把它们都赶跑了。”


That night, like most nights, Winnie dreamed of dragons. And that night, like most nights, she woke to a boom and rumble and a flash! “The dragons are back!” she cried. “I can hear them snoring!” But her parents called, “It's just a storm! Go back to sleep!”

那天晚上,像大多数夜晚一样,温妮梦见了龙。那天晚上,像大多数夜晚一样,她被一阵电闪雷鸣声惊醒!“龙回来了!”她喊道。“我能听到它们的鼾声!”但她的爸爸妈妈说:“只是一场风暴!快回去睡觉吧!”


So, Winnie slept. But her dreams were still full of dragons and, the next day, she practised with her wooden sword. “Just in case a dragon comes,” she said. Suddenly, the wind started to howl.

于是,温妮就睡觉了。但她的梦里都是龙的身影。第二天,她用木剑练习剑术。“万一有龙来”她说。突然,风开始呼号起来。


“Winnie, come in now!” called her mum. “There's a storm coming.” Winnie looked up at the sky. It didn't look stormy. But then a huge gust of wind swept her up into the air, tumbling and twisting over the tree tops.

“温妮,快进房间!”妈妈喊道,“暴风雨要来了。”温妮看了看天空,看起来不像有暴风雨啊。接着,一阵狂风把她一路翻滚,吹到了树顶上。


"Help me!" she cried. She was soaring over the hills when she started to fall. Down and down she went until...whoosh! She landed on the back of an actual dragon! The dragon set her down gently in a faraway clearing. “You DO still exist!” she gasped.

“快救救我!”温妮大喊道。她从空中落下来时,飞过了一片山丘。她一直往下落,往下落,直到.....嗖的一声。她落到了一条真龙的背上。龙轻轻地把她放在远处的空地上。“原来真的有龙啊!”她喘息着说道。


“Sorry if I, uh, swept you off your feet. Sometimes I flap my wings too hard.” The next moment, they heard a loud rumbling and shuffling through the trees. “Aha!” said the dragon. “You can meet my friends, too.”

“抱歉让你疯狂地迷恋上我了。有时我拍打翅膀太用力了。”接着,他们听到树林传来一阵隆隆的巨响。“啊!”龙对温妮说,“你也可以见见我的朋友们。”


Winnie looked up at three extraordinary faces. “I've seen you on the tapestry!” she cried. But the creatures just frowned at her. “Why did you bring her here?” growled the lion. “You know humans always hurt us,” said the griffon. “Look, she has a sword,” said the tree man.

温妮抬头看见三张奇异非凡的脸庞。“我在挂毯上见过你们!”她喊道。但那些家伙对着她只是皱起了眉头。“你怎么把她带到这儿来了?”狮子说。“你应该知道人类会伤害我们的。”狮鹫说。“看,她还有一把剑。”树人说。


Winnie threw down her sword. “I'd never hurt you.” “Don't mind them,” said the dragon. "It's just...we're the last of our kind, so we have to stay secret." “I only want to be friends,” said Winnie. 

温妮丢下她的剑说道:“我绝不会伤害你们的。”“别介意。”龙说,“只是......我们都是本族最后一员了,我们必须得隐秘的生活。”“我只想和你们做朋友。”温妮说。


So, for the rest of the day, she did what friends do. She decorated the tree man with flowers, she collected the tastiest apples for the griffon and, as the sun set, she gave the winged lion's back a good, long scratch. 

于是,在接下来的一天,她做了朋友间所作的事情。她用鲜花装饰树人,她为狮鹫采集了最美味的苹果,在太阳落山时,她温柔地给有翅膀的狮子挠了很长时间的痒痒。


“Where do you sleep?” she asked. “We don't,” said the lion. “At night-time, humans are asleep, and that's when we can go wild, have a beastly bash and a hullabaloo!”

“你们睡在哪里?”温妮问。“我们不用睡觉。”狮子说,“晚上人类睡觉时,就是我们狂欢的时刻,我们可以来一场野兽般的消遣狂欢。


As the creatures danced, Winnie gasped in amazement. It was the noises she heard every night. Winnie danced with her fantastical friends till the forest shook.

当动物们开始起舞,温妮惊讶的都喘不过气来。这就是她每天晚上听到的喧闹声。温妮和她神奇的朋友们一起跳舞,整个树林都回荡着喧闹。


Then, suddenly, the sound of horses' hooves echoed through the hills and a voice shouted, “Winnie, where are you?” “That's my dad! I have to go home now.” “But you can't go home,” said the griffon. “You have to stay with us now, or the humans will find us.”

突然,马蹄声在山丘里回荡,一个声音喊道:“温妮,你在哪?”“那是我爸爸,我得马上回家了。”“但你不能回家。”狮鹫说,“你得和我们呆在一起,否则人类就会发现我们。”


Winnie was horrified. “We're the last ones left,” said the tree man, “so we have to be kept secret." "Can you keep a secret?” asked the dragon doubtfully. Winnie stood tall. “Of course I can! You're my friends and I'd never let you down.”

温妮害怕极了。“我们是仅存的一族了。”树人说,“所以我们必须保守秘密。”“你可以保守这个秘密吗?”龙疑惑地问道。温妮站的笔直:“当然可以!你们是我的朋友,我一定不会让你们失望的。”


“In that case,” said the griffon, “we'll take you home, but we shall have to be quiet as mice.” Tree man kept lookout, and they snuck through the valleys until they saw the town through the trees.

“既然如此,”狮鹫说,“我们带你回家,但是我们必须像老鼠一样悄无声息。”树人一直保持警戒,他们一起悄悄地穿过山谷,直到他们穿过树林看到小镇。


Then, it was time to say goodbye. “I'll keep your secret forever,” said Winnie. Winnie's parents searched for hours. Suddenly, in the distance, they saw a light come on in their home.

是时候说再见了。“我会永远帮你们保守秘密的。”温妮说。温妮的爸爸妈妈找了她好几个小时。突然,在远处,他们看见了家里亮起了灯。


"Perhaps she's back!" they cried, and she was. “Where have you been? We've been so worried.” But Winnie was too tired to say. “I think it's bedtime,” said her mum.

“说不定她已经回来了!”他们叫着温妮,温妮果然在家。“你到哪里去了?我们一直都很担心你。”但是温妮累的已经说不出话了。“我想该睡觉了。”温妮妈妈说。


That night, like most nights, they all woke to a boom and a rumble and a flash. “Perhaps the dragons are back,” cried her parents. “We can hear them snoring!” “It's just a storm,” said Winnie. “Go back to sleep.” So, they slept, and their dreams were full of dragons.

那天晚上,像大多数晚上一样,他们都被一阵电闪雷鸣声惊醒。“也许是龙回来了。”她的爸爸妈妈说,“我们能听见它的鼾声!”“只是一场风暴。”温妮说,“快去睡觉吧。于是他们继续睡觉,但他们的梦里都是龙的身影。


Winnie was right. Those amazing creatures did live in the forest. Now, away you go to bed, and remember, if you wake to a boom and a rumble and a flash, it's probably just a storm. So, whether you're a dragon, a griffon, a winged lion or just a good old-fashioned human, sleep well, you fantastic beasts.

温妮是对的。那些神奇的动物们确实生活在森林里。现在,上床去睡觉吧,记住,如果你被一阵电闪雷鸣声惊醒,那可能只是一场风暴。所以,不管你是龙,狮鹫,有翅膀的狮子或只是一个善良的老古董,睡个好觉吧,你们这些神奇的动物。
