“Tell us about a passion or strong interest of yours. How [and when] did you become involved in this interest [and for how long have you been involved]? What have you learned about yourself from this interest? How will you apply this knowledge as a student at the University of Waterloo? (900-character limit)”
The excitement I felt when my first self-taught program ran successfully was like discovering an entirely new world.
It all started with a simple problem in my daily life. I realized I was spending too much time planning my study tasks rather than focusing on completing them. This sparked the idea of creating a study task management program. At the time, I had no programming experience, but I didn’t let that stop me. I began learning Python through free online resources, starting with basic syntax and logical structures. From writing my first "Hello World" program to understanding how if-else statements worked, every step was both challenging and rewarding.
The turning point came when I developed the core feature of my program: automatically generating a daily task list based on priority levels. To make it work, I explored Python’s datetime module and learned how to sort data effectively. My initial attempts were filled with errors, and I spent countless hours debugging, often late into the night. Finally, when the program generated the correct task list, I was overjoyed, knowing I had overcome the hurdles.
This small program not only significantly improved my study efficiency but also caught the attention of my classmates. I shared it with them and even customized task planners for a few peers. This experience made me realize the power of technology—not just for solving personal problems but for making a positive impact on others.
Teaching myself programming taught me how to face challenges in unfamiliar fields and developed my problem-solving skills and perseverance. At the University of Waterloo, I aim to bring this spirit of self-learning and problem-solving to team projects, leveraging technology to create meaningful solutions for real-world challenges.

“Briefly describe a group, organization, or community that you have been involved in, are a member of, and/or have contributed to. What contributions have you made as a member of this group? Were you able to lead, influence others and/or influence decisions for the good of the group and its goals? How has your involvement helped make this community better?”

The moment our solar-powered car crossed the finish line, I knew all the hard work had paid off.
In Grade 10, I joined my school’s sustainable energy club, where students worked on projects addressing real-world environmental challenges. Motivated by my passion for renewable energy, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to combine technology with sustainability.
In my second year, we entered a regional competition to build a solar-powered vehicle. As the lead designer, I was responsible for developing an efficient energy system while managing a small team of peers. We faced numerous challenges—solar panel efficiency, weight balance, and mechanical failures—but I encouraged the team to stay focused and experiment with different solutions.
After weeks of testing and late-night brainstorming, we successfully built a functional prototype. On competition day, our car not only completed the race but also won the award for “Best Energy Efficiency.” Seeing my teammates celebrate was incredibly rewarding, knowing our collective perseverance and collaboration had led to success.
This experience taught me the importance of resilience, teamwork, and creative problem-solving when facing technical challenges. At Waterloo, I hope to contribute these skills to projects that focus on innovation and sustainability, working alongside like-minded peers to create meaningful solutions for a better future.

“Describe a situation where you were treated unfairly or witnessed someone else being treated unfairly. What did you do at the time and why? Would you do anything differently if the same situation occurred today? Has this event impacted or changed who you are now and if so, how?”
The hardest decision I ever made was choosing between my comfort zone and standing up for someone in need.
In Grade 10, a new student, Sarah, joined my class. She was shy and often struggled to fit in. Some classmates started making fun of her during lunch breaks, mimicking her accent and mocking her answers in class. At first, I avoided getting involved, fearing that speaking up might make me a target as well.
One day, the teasing escalated, and Sarah was visibly upset. I realized that staying silent would make me complicit. Summoning my courage, I confronted the group and asked them to stop, explaining how their actions were hurtful and unnecessary. While they dismissed my comments at first, my persistence eventually made them reconsider their behavior.
Sarah later thanked me for standing up for her, and we eventually became good friends. Over time, the teasing subsided, and some classmates even apologized to her. This experience taught me that taking a stand, even when uncomfortable, can create meaningful change for someone else.
This moment reshaped my perspective on leadership and empathy. I learned that being a bystander isn’t an option when fairness and respect are at stake. At Waterloo, I’ll bring this commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, working with peers to uphold values of kindness and integrity, even in challenging situations.

The University of Waterloo’s emphasis on innovation and hands-on experience aligns perfectly with my desire to create solutions that address real-world challenges.
My interest in engineering began in Grade 9 when I participated in a school project to design a water filtration system for rural communities. Seeing how technology could improve lives inspired me to pursue engineering further. Since then, I’ve taken part in science fairs, where I designed and tested prototypes for energy-efficient devices, and I enrolled in computer programming courses to expand my technical skills.
To help me decide on a university, I spoke with alumni from Waterloo who shared how the university’s rigorous curriculum and co-op program enabled them to tackle real-world projects early in their careers. I also attended an open house, where I saw student projects like autonomous vehicles and clean energy solutions firsthand. This experience confirmed Waterloo’s focus on practical learning and innovation.
Hearing about these success stories and witnessing Waterloo’s culture of problem-solving solidified my choice. I realized that Waterloo’s engineering program would provide the ideal environment for me to develop the skills and experience needed to become a capable and forward-thinking engineer.
At Waterloo, I look forward to contributing to team-based design projects and gaining hands-on experience through co-op placements. I’m particularly excited about applying my passion for sustainable technology to address global challenges, collaborating with peers and faculty who share the same drive for innovation.
