湖北地区发掘出土的音乐文物十分丰富,无不显示出湖北地区古代音乐辉煌的往昔,反映出湖北音乐史的历史风貌和发展过程,使今人对该地区古代先民的音乐生活有了更为真切的了解。

In Hubei Province, a large number of ancient musical instrumentshave been unearthed.They show the glory of the province's ancient music, reflect the features and development process of the province'smusical history andenable modern people to better understand the musical life of theancientpeople who lived in the region.

1978年发掘出土的曾侯乙编钟是世界上绝无仅有的重大发现,在世界乐器史中独树一帜,在人类文化史、音乐史、科技史等领域占有重要地位,是公元前5世纪中国文明成就的集中体现。曾侯乙编钟是我国迄今发现数量最多、保存最好、音律最全、气势最宏伟的一套编钟。一钟双音,十二个半音齐备等方面的音乐成就,改写了世界音乐史。其3755字铭文,系统记载了中国当时的音乐学理论。曾侯乙编钟以声音和文字互相印证的方式,保存了2400年前人类的音乐记忆。这一音乐史上的重大发现,充分展示了中华民族远古文化的辉煌成就,它不仅使人为之倾倒,也使人观后民族自豪感油然而生。

The unearthing of the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng in 1978 is anunprecedented global discovery. These chime bells are unique in the world's history ofmusical instruments.They play an important role in the historyof human culture, music and science and technology and fullyreflect the achievements of Chinese civilisation in the 5thcentury BCE. Among all the chime bell sets ever discovered in China, this set has the largest number of chime bells,which are the best preserved, provide the most completetonesand produce the most magnificent music.These chime bells have all 12semitones, and each bell can produce two tones.These musical achievements have rewritten world musichistory. The 3,755-character inscription is a systematic record of Chinese music theory of the time. The sound and inscription of these chime bells corroborate with each other,thus preservingthe memories of music from those living 2,400 years ago. This major discovery in the field of music history fully demonstrates the brilliant achievements of ancient Chinese culture, havingamazed the world and filling Chinese people with a sense ofnational pride.

曾侯乙编钟的三次奏响

曾侯乙编钟的出土,震惊文化界、文物界、科技界,更震惊中国乐坛。文化部派音乐学家赶赴湖北随县(今随州)曾侯乙墓发掘现场,对全套编钟逐个进行测音。1978年7月3日,在随县展览馆,黄翔鹏、王湘对出土编钟作第一次音响检测,在室温为30℃—32℃的环境下,使用从北京带来的闪光音准仪(即频闪观察仪)进行测音。检测结果显示:曾侯乙编钟音乐性能卓越,音律纯正、音色优美,音域宽广跨越5个八度,只比现代钢琴少一个八度,中心音域十二个半音齐全。测音同时还与考古队保管组共同完成了对编钟的实测,取得了全部钟体几何尺寸、重量等完整数据。

The unearthingof the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng shocked cultural, archaeological and scientific communities and especiallyChinese music circles. Musicologistsfrom the Ministry for Culture rushed to the excavation site in Suixian County (now Suizhou City) totest the tone of each chime bell. On July 3, 1978, atan ambient temperature of 30–32°C in the Exhibition Centre of Suixian County,Huang Xiangpeng and Wang Xiang used the stroboscopic tonometer thatthey had brought from Beijing to carry out the first acoustic tests on the unearthed chime bells. The test results showed that these chime bellsdeliver excellent musicality, pure tones anda beautifultimbre. They feature a wide range that spans five octaves (the modern piano ranging six octaves), and their middle register has all 12 semitones.Huang and Wang also assisted the custodians of the archaeological team in making measurements and obtaining the geometric size, weight and other data of each chime bell.


专家们对出土的排箫、竹篪等乐器也进行了测音。由于浸泡在水中逾2000年,此类竹木乐器大多已经朽坏无法吹奏了,其中仅有一件排箫由王湘吹出了乐音,并现场进行了录音摄像,留下了可贵的音响资料。

The experts also tested the tones of other unearthed instruments such as Paixiao panpipes and Chi pipes. Having been immersed in water for more than 2,000 years, most of these bamboo and wood instruments were decayed and could not be played, but Wang Xiang managed to play a piece of music with one of them, which was recorded and left valuable audio data.


7月26日经过保护处理后的编钟及钟架陆续运往武汉军区71师礼堂,并连夜进行复原组装。对部分已损的编钟挂钩做了修理,缺损的临时用钢筋打造了几件代用。

On 26 July, after some protection measures had been taken, the chime bells and theirracks were transported in batches to the auditorium of the 71stdivision of the Wuhan Military Region, where they were restored and assembled overnight. Some partly damaged hanging hooks were repaired, and several missing ones were temporarily replaced with those of steel bars.


7月27日由冯光生负责,湖北省博物馆考古队队员与武汉军区71师战士们组成了首支编钟乐队,黄翔鹏担任编导和指挥。黄翔鹏采用了和声和对位技术,对当时流行最广的名曲《东方红》进行了编配,又根据唐代陈康士琴曲《离骚》新编了一曲《楚商》;湖北省电影制片厂作曲家王原平则根据美国电影《魂断蓝桥》插曲《一路平安》改编了一首外国乐曲。除此之外,编钟乐队还选了几首当时流行的民歌,如《浏阳河》《草原上升起不落的太阳》等,连夜进行排练。

On 27 July, instructed by Feng Guangsheng,the members of the HBPM Archaeological Team and the soldiers of the 71stdivision of the Wuhan Military Region formed the first chime bell band, with Huang Xiangpengo acting as director and conductor.Usingharmony and counterpoint techniques,Huang orchestratedThe East is red,the most popular song at the time, and he also composed a piece of music called Chu Shangon the basis of Li Sao, a piece of zither music created by Chen Kangshi during the Tang dynasty. Wang Yuanping,a composerwith the Hubei Provincial Film Studio,adapted AuldLang Syne,the theme song of the American film Waterloo Bridge, into a piece of foreign-style music. In addition, the chime bellband also took a night to rehearse a few popular folk songs at the time, such as The Liuyang River and A never-setting sun is rising from the grassland.


8月1日下午2时,首次编钟音乐会在71师大礼堂拉开了帷幕。湖北省党政主要领导陈丕显、韩宁夫观看了表演,入场观众对这千古绝响、旷世之绝一饱眼福。音乐会由考古队长谭维四主持,他向观众概括介绍编钟和其他乐器的情况。音乐会以《东方红》为开篇正式开始,整场音乐会经历了两个多小时,最后以《国际歌》乐曲为落幕。演出结束时,礼堂内一片寂静,良久,人们才如梦方醒,顿时掌声雷动,许多人泪水涟涟。中央新闻纪录电影制片厂、新华社的工作人员在现场进行了录音录像,随后,这场音乐会的影像资料由中央电视台、中央人民广播台广为传播。

At 2:00 p.m.on 1 August, the first chime bell concert began in the auditorium of the 71stdivision. Hubei Province'sprincipalparty and government leaders, Chen Pixian and Han Ningfu, attended the performance.The audience was amazed by the gorgeous music played with millennium-old instruments. Tan Weisi, leader of the archaeological team, presided over the concert and briefed on the situation of the chimebells and other instruments. The concert began with The East is red. It lasted more than two hours and concluded with The Internationale. Whenthe performance came to an end, not a single sound was heard in the auditorium. After a long while, the audience seemed to wake from a dream andgave thunderous applause, and many people were rendered tearful. The Central News Record Film Studio andXinhua News Agency recorded the concert. Later, the audio and video recordings of the concert were broadcast by the China Central Television and the Central People's Broadcasting Station.


编钟的第二次奏响是在1984年。为庆祝新中国成立35周年,湖北省博物馆演奏人员被特批随编钟进京,在北京中南海怀仁堂,为各国驻华大使演奏了中国古曲《春江花月夜》和创作曲目《楚商》以及《欢乐颂》等中外名曲。

The second chime bell concert was held in 1984. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, chime bell performers of the HBPM were specially invited to Huairen Hall in Zhongnanhai, Beijing. There, they played a series of famous Chinese and foreign musical compositions forvarious foreign ambassadors to China, with pieces includingA night of flowers and moonlight by the Spring River, Chu Shangand Ode to joy.


编钟第三次奏响是1997年。为迎接香港回归,著名作曲家谭盾创作大型交响乐《1997:天·地·人》,经中央特批,破例使用编钟原件采音录制。3月的一个晚上,湖北省博物馆编钟厅内,来自湖北省博物馆、武汉音乐学院、湖北省歌舞剧院的6名演奏家,在谭盾的指挥下,用曾侯乙编钟原件完成了交响乐《1997:天·地·人》编钟部分的演奏。录音师史蒂夫·艾普斯顿(美)和理查德·金(加拿大)这两位帕瓦罗蒂和马友友的专职录音师,被千年的编钟敲击出的美妙乐音惊呆了,直呼“摄人心魄,不可思议”!这次用编钟原件演奏,用于向全球发行的交响乐《1997:天·地·人》CD。

The third time the chime bells were played was in 1997. To celebrate the return of Hong Kong to China, the famous composer Tan Dun created a large-scale symphony—1997: Heaven, Earth and Man. Upon special approval by the Central Government, the original chime bells were used to perform part of the symphony, and a recording was made. One evening in March, six musical performers from the HBPM, the Wuhan Conservatory of Music and the Hubei Provincial Song and Dance Theatre gathered in the HBPM's Hall of Chime Bells.With Tan Dun acting as conductor, they performed the chime bell part of the symphony 1997: Heaven, Earth and Manwith the original chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng. Steve Epston (the United States) and Richard King (Canada), special sound engineers for Pavarotti and Yo-Yo Ma, respectively, were stunned by the wonderful music produced by the millennium-old chime bells and kept saying words such as 'awesome' and'incredible'.Later, the symphony 1997: Heaven, Earth and Man,part of which was played with the original chime bells, was distributed worldwide.

曾侯乙编钟出土之后,在考古、音乐、铸造、工艺美术等各界都引起了极大的兴趣。人们在赞赏我国古代劳动人民的辉煌成就的同时,也提出了一系列的问题。如:精美的青铜编钟是如何铸造出来的?为什么一件钟能发出两个乐音?对编钟如何进行科学的保护?编钟能否复制?能否搬上舞台进行演出?等等。一些外国友人和友好团体、政府部门,纷纷向我国有关方面提出前往展出和演奏的邀请。

After their unearthing, the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zengdrew intense attention from various fields, such as archaeological circles, as well as the music, casting and arts and crafts industries. While admiring the brilliant achievements of the working peopleofancient China, people also raised a series of questions:How were the exquisitebronze chime bells cast? Why can each of them produce two musical tones? How should the chime bells be scientificallyprotected? Can the chime bells be copied? Can they be used for performanceson a stage? Some foreign friends, organisations and governmental departments invited competent Chinese authorities to hold exhibitions and performances in their countries.


党和政府对这套编钟的出土极为关注。1979年4、5月间,叶剑英、李先念、谷牧、王任重等国家领导人先后视察了湖北省博物馆,重点参观曾侯乙墓出土文物,指出这是“国宝”,并询问编钟能否复制。叶剑英用放大镜逐字察看钟上的铭文,又亲自撞钟试音,连声赞叹:这是祖国的伟大之处啊!再三嘱咐,这些文物都是国宝,要认真保管好。李先念听罢编钟演奏的《东方红》后说:“不能只会奏一个曲子,还要学习,要研究,演奏更多乐曲。要为编钟设个专馆,陈列好,保护好。还要有个音乐厅,将来用复制品进行演奏,国内外观众都可以来听!”

The party and government weremuch concerned about the unearthing of this set of chime bells. In April and May 1979, Ye Jianying, Li Xiannian, Gu Mu, Wang Renzhong and other state leaders inspected the HBPM.They paid specialattention to the cultural relics unearthed from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng, pointed out that thesecultural relics are national treasures and asked if the chime bells could be replicated. Ye Jianying used a magnifying glass to examinethe inscription on the chime bells character by characterand even tried playing them.Hearingthe beautiful tones, hecould not help but to praisingly exclaim,'They show the greatness of our motherland!'He urged again and again that these national treasures must be carefully preserved. After listening to The East is red played by the chime bells, Li Xiannian said,'One song is not enough.We must study them so that they can play more musical compositions. We should set up a special hall to exhibit and protect the chime bells. There should also be aspecialconcert hall.In the future, we can use their replicas to play music for domestic and foreign audiences!'


于是,将这号称世界奇迹的国宝编钟复制出来,被专家学者们提上了议事日程。

Therefore, the reproduction of these chime bells, known as a world wonder and national treasure, was put on the agenda by experts and scholars.


复制全套曾侯乙编钟得到了国家文物局支持,湖北省博物馆邀请中国科学院自然科学史研究所、武汉机械工艺研究所、佛山球墨铸铁研究所、武汉工学院和哈尔滨科技大学等单位上百名科技人员,大家通力协作,采用了多种现代技术手段,对这套编钟进行了分析研究。发现中国早在2400多年前就摸索出了铜、锡、铅三种成分的最佳配方,以获得优美的音色;掌握了钟体大小、钟壁厚薄与音高的严格比例,铸造出不同音高的编制系列;设计了“合瓦式”的独特钟形与复杂的钟腔结构,形成了奇妙的一钟双音和优美的旋律。

The reproductionof the whole set of chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng received support from the National Cultural Heritage Administration. At the invitation of the HBPM, hundreds of scientific and technical personnel from theInstitute for the History of Natural Sciences,Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Wuhan Mechanical Technology Institute, the Foshan Nodular Cast Iron Research Institute, the Wuhan Institute of Technology,the Harbin University of Science and Technology and other institutions worked together and adopted a variety of modern techniques to analyse and study this set of chime bells. It was discovered that as early as 2,400 years ago,Chinese people had developed the best formula of copper, tin and lead alloy to obtain beautiful tones, mastered the strict proportionsbetween the sizes, wall thicknesses and pitches of chime bells toproduce different pitch sequencesanddesigned a unique closed-tile bell shape as well as complicatedbell-cavity structure to achievebeautiful melodies and the effect of one bell with two tones.


要把编钟复制得形似并不难,而真正难的是神似。除了外形以外,关键是复制的编钟要与原编钟的发音一模一样。专家学者、技术人员反复科研试制,逐渐掌握了雕模、制模、翻模、青铜浇铸、定音等工艺。众多音乐专家赶赴现场,指导调音。

The real challenge was not to make the replicas and original chime bells alike in form, but to make them alike in spirit. Apart from the appearances, the tones produced by the replicas and originals must be exactly the same. After repeated research and trial productions, the experts, scholars and technicians gradually mastered the mould-carving, mould-making, mould-rolling, bronze casting and tuningprocesses. Manymusical expertscame to directing tuning efforts.


1982年底,编钟复制研究组成功复制出了上层钮钟12件、中层甬钟14件、下层大甬钟2件,共28件,基本上做到外貌、声音与原件一致,并积累了大量资料和经验,在编钟复制技术上获得了巨大成功。1983年1月7日,国家文物局在武汉召开了编钟复制研究成果鉴定会,复制件获得通过与好评。

By the end of 1982, the chime bell reproduction research group had successfully replicated 28 chime bells,including 12 upper-layer Niu bells, 14 middle-layer Yong bells and 2 lower-layerlargeYongbells. The appearances and tones of the replicaswere basically the same as those of the originals.The experts also accumulated a large amount of data and experience and achieved great success in chime bell reproduction technology. On 7 January1983, the National Cultural Heritage Administrationheld anappraisal conference on the chime bell reproduction research results in Wuhan.The replicas passed saidappraisal and were hailed as successful.


历时5年之久,1984年7月,全套编钟的复制研究工作全部完成。文化部于同年9月5日组织全国多学科专家组成的鉴定委员会进行了鉴定验收,认为复制件达到了“形似、声似”的复制要求,并颁发了验收证书。1985年,此项成果又荣获中华人民共和国文化部科技成果一等奖。

In July 1984, after five years of hard work, the expertsand technicians completed reproductionof the whole set of chime bells. On 5 September of the same year, the Ministry for Culture organised the appraisal and acceptance of all the replicas. The appraisal committee,which was composed of multidisciplinary experts from across the country, believed that the replicas and the originals were alike in terms of both form and tone and issued the acceptance certificate. In 1985, the reproduction was awarded the first prize of scientific and technological achievements bythe Chinese Ministry for Culture.


随着编钟的成功复制,首先由北京大钟寺特邀我国民族音乐大师彭修文先生等著名作曲家、指挥家、演奏家,首次使用曾侯乙编钟、编磬复制件录制了体现昔日帝王威仪的宫廷雅乐及享誉中外的传统名曲,由中国唱片厂广州公司出版印制发行,让海内外更多听众从中领略到编钟那宏亮豪放、庄重肃穆、典雅纤巧等绚丽多姿的风采。1987年12月,曾侯乙编钟邮票、小型张有声邮折,开国内外音响邮票之先河,再次把编钟的形声推向世界。

After the successful reproduction of the chime bells, the Chinese folk music master Peng Xiuwen and other famous composers, conductors and performers werefirst invited tothe Great Bell Temple inBeijing.With the replicas of the chime bells and chime stones of Marquis Yi of Zeng, theyproduced not onlymajestic ancient court music, but also some musical compositions well-known both at home and abroad.The records were published and distributed by the China Record (Guangzhou) Company(Limited), enabling more people around the world to appreciate the grandeur, solemnity, elegance and splendour of chime bellmusic. In December 1987, the stamps and the world'sfirstaudiblestamp foldersfeaturing the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zengwere released and once again introduced the appearances and tones of chime bells to the world.


在第一套编钟复制成功后,经国家文物局批准,湖北省博物馆又先后为湖北省博物馆编钟演奏厅、台湾鸿禧美术馆、陕西黄帝陵、湖北随州博物馆等单位各复制了一套。在这几次的复制过程中,无论是铸造技术、工艺流程还是调音水平,都有不同程度的改进和提高,确立了一套符合实际的古乐器复制技术鉴定标准。

After the successful reproduction of the first set of chime bells, with the approval of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, the HBPMmade four more sets of chime bells for the HBPM Chime Bell Concert Hall, the Chang Foundation Museum in Taipei, the Huangdi Mausoleum in Shaanxi and the Suizhou MuseuminHubei. In thesereproductions, experts and technicians improvedthe casting technology, technical process and tuning skills to certain degrees and established a system of practical identification standards for reproduction of ancient musical instruments.

为了弘扬历史文化,让世人领略曾侯乙编钟的神奇和古代音乐的魅力,湖北省博物馆于1983年组建了编钟乐团,以复制的全套曾侯乙编钟、编磬为核心,组合古琴、瑟、笙、篪、排箫、埙、鼓等多种出土的古代乐器复制件,将古代宫廷歌舞盛况和古代湖北地区人们的音乐生活状况再现于今天的艺术舞台之上。

In order to promotehistory and culture and introduce the world to the wonderfulness of the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng and the charm of ancient music, the HBPM established a chimes orchestra in 1983.With thereplicasof the chime bells and chime stones of Marquis Yi of Zeng as the core, supplemented by the replicas of Guqin zithers, Sezithers, Shengpipes, Chi pipes, Xunwhistles, drums and other unearthed instruments, the ensemble is committedto bringing back ancient court songs and dances as well as the musical life of ancient people fromwhat is now Hubei Province onto today's artistic stage.


湖北省博物馆编钟乐团自成立以来,编排了100多首古今中外名曲。用歌、乐、鼓、舞相结合的艺术形式,将曾侯乙墓出土的数十件古乐器仿制品同台演奏。“金、石、土、革、丝、木、匏、竹”八音和鸣,重奏千古绝响,把古代荆楚人民的艺术风貌、盛楚乐章历史地再现于舞台。

Since its establishment, the HBPMChimes Orchestra has rehearsedmore than 100 famous songsfrom all eras and places all over the world. In artistic formsintegrating songs, dances,drum music and other instrumental music, the replicas of dozens of ancient instruments unearthed from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zengare played on the same stage. The metal, stone, clay, leather, silk, wood, gourd and bamboo instruments bring back to life the music of more than 2,000 years ago and historically present the artistic landscape of the Jing-Chu people on stage.

Cultural messengers


湖北省博物馆编钟乐团自组建以来,接待过包括日本裕仁天皇、皇太子及皇室成员、日本前首相中曾根康弘、新加坡前总理李光耀、英国前首相希思、德国前总理科尔、法国前总统希拉克、卢森堡大公等多个国家的首脑。

Since its establishment, the HBPM Chimes Orchestra has received heads of state from many countries, including Japanese Emperor Hirohito, the Japanese crown prince and other royal family members; former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro; former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew; former British Prime Minister Edward Heath; former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl; former French President Jacques Chirac;and the grand duke of Luxembourg.


美国前国务卿基辛格博士曾于1982年和1996年来过湖北省博物馆,每次都要聆听编钟演奏。1999年6月,基辛格利用在武汉商谈合作项目的机会,再次提出到湖北省博物馆欣赏编钟演奏,当编钟编磬演奏的《友谊地久天长》乐曲响起时,基辛格博士激动地走上舞台为演奏喝彩。他在留言簿上写道:能够到这样一个美好的地方来参观学习,无论是对于我个人,还是对于所有的人,都是一种很高很高的荣耀。临别时他诚恳地表示还要来七次、八次!

Dr Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State, visited the HBPM in 1982 and 1996 and listened to the chime bell performance each time. In June 1999, when discussing cooperation projects in Wuhan,he once again came to the HBPM to enjoy the chime bell performance. When the music ofAuld Lang Syne was played with chime bells and chime stones, DrKissinger wasso excited that he walked up the stage to cheer for the performers. He wrote in the guestbook: 'Being able to visit such a beautiful place is a great [honour]for me and for everyone.'When he left the HBPM, he said sincerely that he wished to come back seven or eight more times!


自1984年编钟复制件成功面世后,编钟原件再未离开过湖北省博物馆。而此后的对外文化交流中,曾侯乙编钟复制件成为编钟“替身”漂洋过海,完成了很多重大任务。作为文化使者,编钟复制件随各类文物展览到访过美国、法国、英国、德国、荷兰、卢森堡、日本、新加坡等国家和中国台湾、香港地区。《编钟乐舞》使全世界观众能够欣赏到这绚丽独特的中国古代音乐舞蹈文化的精髓,每到一处都受到了当地群众和政府首脑的赞誉和欢迎。

Since the replicasof chime bells were successfully produced in 1984, the original chime bells have never left the HBPM. In subsequent cultural exchanges with foreign countries, thesereplicas have sailed across the ocean and performedmany important missions. As cultural messengers, thesereplicas, together with other cultural relics, have been exhibited inmany countries such as the US, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Japan and Singapore as well as some regions such as Taiwan and Hong Kong. Wherever it goes,chimebell music and dance,which allows audiences around the world to appreciate the essence of unique and splendid ancient Chinese music and dance culture,isalways praised and welcomed by local people and state leaders.


1992年3月,为纪念中日邦交正常化二十周年,湖北省博物馆应日本东京国家博物馆、日中文化交流协会、日本经济新闻社邀请,赴日举办“曾侯乙墓出土文物特别展”。湖北省博物馆编钟乐团携曾侯乙编钟复制件等古乐器随展演奏。宽敞的演奏大厅内,《楚商》《樱花》《四季》等中日两国人民所熟悉的名曲,令听众陶醉不已。尽管编钟乐团每天为观众演奏8场, 但仍不能满足观众需求,挤不进演奏厅,观众只得挤在走廊上听。东京国家博物馆工作人员对中国同仁说:让失传的古乐器发出如此美妙的乐音,真了不起,这是一种极好的艺术享受。展演期间,日本明仁天皇和皇后参观了展览,并欣赏编钟演奏。

In March 1992, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the normalisation of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, the HBPM was invited by the Kyoto National Museum, the Japan-China Cultural Exchange Association, and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun tohold aspecial exhibition on the cultural relics unearthed from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng in Japan. The HBPM Chimes Orchestrabrought the replicas of the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng and other ancient instrumentsfor exhibition and performances. In the spacious concert hall, Chu Shang, Sakura, Four seasonsand other songs well-known to Chinese and Japanese people alike intoxicatedthe audience. Although the Chimes Orchestra put on eight performances aday, all seats in the concert hall were taken every time, and some people had to stand in the hallway. The staff members of the KyotoNational Museum told their Chinese peersthat it was marvellous to make theseonce-lost ancient instruments produce such wonderful music and that listening to the music was a phenomenal artistic experience. Even Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the exhibition and attendedthe chime bellperformance.


1993年8月,新加坡文物馆举办“荆楚雄风文物展”,湖北省博物馆编钟乐团携编钟复制件赴新加坡随展演出。

In August 1993, the HBPM held the Jing-Chu Cultural Relics Exhibition at the Singaporean Cultural Relics Museum, and theHBPM Chimes Orchestra also brought the replicas of chime bellsthere for an exhibition and performances.


1995年春,一年一度的“欧洲文化节”在卢森堡举行。由于意识形态方面的原因,卢森堡新闻媒体一直很少介绍新中国的信息。在这次欧洲文化节上,湖北省博物馆应邀在卢森堡举办“中国周代艺术品展”,复制的编钟、编磬及古乐器同时进行现场演奏,引起轰动。卢森堡、德国、英国、法国等国十多家电视、广播、报刊争相报道。神奇的编钟演奏,令欧洲观众陶醉,从而发展到对中国日益喜爱和关注。以往很少关注中国的卢森堡文化部长艾妮科女士在活动结束时感叹道:一个多月里,狂热的观众看到了一幅迷人的图画,并扩大了对遥远东方一个真实文化的了解。

In the spring of 1995, the annual European Cultural Festival was held in Luxembourg. In the past, due to ideological reasons, local news media seldom reported about the People's Republic of China. During this European Cultural Festival, the HBPM was invited to hold an exhibition on the artworks of the Zhou dynasty in Luxembourg.The performances of chime bells, chime stones and other ancient instruments caused a sensation and were covered by more than a dozen TV stations, radiostations, newspapers and magazines fromLuxembourg, Germany, the UK and France. The wonderfulchime bellperformancesimpressed the European audience, aroused their interest in and gradually changed their attitude towards China. MsEniko, thenminister of the Luxembourg Ministry for Culture, used to pay little attention to China, but she said at the conclusion of the event,'In more than a month, the enthusiasticaudience saw a fascinating picture and learned more about thetrue culture of a distant land in the East.'


1997年7月1日,曾侯乙编钟在香港会展中心举行的香港回归主权交接仪式上亮相。由著名音乐家谭盾指挥,湖北省博物馆编钟乐团、亚洲青年交响乐团、香港叶氏儿童合唱团、著名的大提琴演奏家马友友等同台演出交响曲《1997:天·地·人》。

On 1 July 1997, the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zengappeared at the Hong Kong handover ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Conducted by the famous musician Tan Dun, the HBPM Chimes Orchestra, the Asian Youth Orchestra, the Hong Kong Yip's Children's Choir and the famous cellist Yo-Yo Majointly performed the symphony 1997: Heaven, Earth and Man.


1997年11月-1998年3月,为加强海峡两岸文化交流,“湖北省博物馆藏品精华展”在台北市、高雄市两地举行。编钟乐团应邀赴台湾与台北市乐团联合举办“千古绝响”编钟专场音乐会。随后,台湾“文建会”通过台北鸿禧美术馆,向湖北省博物馆订购了一套曾侯乙编钟复制件,作为台湾“民族音乐中心”的珍宝入藏。

From November 1997 to March 1998, in order to strengthen cultural exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, the HBPMAncient Art Exhibition was held in Taipei and Kaohsiung. The HBPMChimes Orchestra was invited to Taiwan and jointlyheld a chime bell concert with the Taipei City Orchestra. Later, through the Chang Foundation Museum in Taipei, the TaiwanCultural Construction Committee ordered a set of replicasof the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng from the HBPM,and these replicas are now housed as a treasure at the Taiwan National Music Hall.


1998年,谭盾与编钟乐团合作举行编钟音乐全球巡演。3月,编钟复制件赴美国纽约林肯艺术中心,与纽约交响乐团合作举办编钟专场音乐会。8月在英国伦敦皇家阿伯特音乐厅与伦敦交响乐团合作举办编钟专场音乐会。10月在美国波士顿与波士顿交响乐团合作举办编钟专场音乐会。

In 1998, Tan Dun and the HBPM Chimes Orchestra joined hands on a global tour. In March, they came to the Lincoln Centre in New Yorkwiththe replicas of chime bells and collaborated with the New York Symphony Orchestra in staging a chime bell concert. In August, they held a chime bell concert at the Royal Albert Hall together with the London Symphony Orchestra. In October, they arrived in Boston and held a chime bell concert withthe Boston Symphony Orchestra.


1999年5月,湖北省博物馆在美国圣地亚哥艺术博物馆举办“龙凤共舞——湖北出土文物展”。谭盾率编钟乐团随展专场演出。

In May 1999, duringthe Dancing with dragons and phoenixes — Hubei unearthed cultural relics exhibitionthat the HBPM held at the San Diego Museum of Art, Tan Dun and the HBPM Chimes Orchestra put on special performances.


2000年4月-9月,湖北省博物馆“孔子时代的音乐”展览在美国华盛顿沙可乐美术馆举办。编钟乐团随展演出。沙可乐美术馆的前馆长在1988年参观湖北省博物馆时,对馆藏文物和独特的编钟乐舞极为赞赏,提出在美国展出这批文物的想法。经过湖北省博物馆和沙可乐美术馆十余年的共同努力,展览终于成功举行。中国驻美国大使李肇星在开幕宴上致词时说,这次展出的文物是中华文化的瑰宝,相信展览必将有助于促进中美两国人民的友谊和了解。

From April to September 2000, the HBPM held an exhibition themed on Music in the era of Confucius at the Sackler Galleryin Washington, DC, and the performances of the Chimes Orchestra added splendour to theexhibition. When the former director of theSackler Gallery visited the HBPM in 1988, he showed great interest in our collection of cultural relics and the unique chime bell music and dance and suggested exhibiting these artefacts in the United States. After more than a decade of joint efforts by the HBPM and the Sackler Gallery, the exhibition was finally held. At the opening banquet, then Chinese Ambassador to the United States Li Zhaoxing described the artefactsto be exhibited as treasures of Chinese culture and said that the exhibition would certainly help promote the friendship and understanding between the Chinese and American people.


2000年11月,由中国人民对外友好协会总协调,法国巴黎音乐城、欧洲钟铃艺术学会承办,中国北京大钟寺古钟博物馆、湖北省博物馆参展的“龙之声——中国考古及钟铃艺术展”在巴黎音乐城举行。该展览是2000年法国“中国文化季”的一项重要活动,配合展览,湖北省博物馆编钟乐团现场编钟演奏。法国总统希拉克在中国驻法国大使吴建民的陪同下兴致勃勃参观了展览,并欣赏了编钟演奏。

In November 2000, with the coordination of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the organisation of the City of Music in Paris and the European Bell Art Society andthe participation of the Ancient Bell Museum of the Great Bell Templein Beijing and the HBPM,the Sound of the dragon —Chinese cultural relics and bell art exhibition was held at the City of Music in Paris. Duringthe exhibition,an important part of the'Season of Chinese culture'in France that year, the HBPMChimes Orchestra also put on chime bell performances. Accompanied by then Chinese Ambassador to France Wu Jianmin, French President Jacques Chirac visited the exhibition with great interest and highly enjoyed the chime bell performance.


2001年10月,应德国科隆东亚艺术博物馆邀请,湖北省博物馆联合湖北省歌舞剧院、武汉音乐学院专家,组成“国髓雅乐”音乐艺术家小组,携出土的古代音乐文物复制件埙、笙、篪、排箫、古琴、瑟等乐器赴德国展演和文化交流。艺术家们演奏的古曲《楚商》《竹枝词》《哀郢》《瑞鹧鸪》《杏花天影》《梅花三弄》,让德国观众领略到了中国古典音乐的华美。

In October 2001, at the invitation of the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne, the HBPM led a group of noted musical experts from the Hubei Provincial Song and Dance Theatre and the Wuhan Conservatory of Musicto Germany. They not only brought the replicas of ancient Chinesemusicalinstruments such as Xun whistles, Sheng pipes, Chi pipes, Paixiao panpipes, Guqin zithers and Se zithers for cultural exchanges and an exhibition, but also performed musical compositions such as Chu Shang,ZhuZhi Ci, Ai Ying, Rui Zhe Gu, Xing Hua TianYing and MeiHua SanNong, which introduced the German audience to the beauty of classical Chinese music.


2004年,谭盾率领编钟乐团携编钟复制件在德国杜伊斯堡与杜伊斯堡交响乐团联合举办编钟专场音乐会。

In 2004, Tan Dun led the HBPM ChimesOrchestra to Duisburg, Germany, where Chinese musicians and the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestrajointly staged a special chime bell concert with the replicated chime bells.


2005年9月-10月,湖北省博物馆在荷兰和比利时举办“中国曾侯乙编钟特别展”,在阿姆斯特丹热带剧院和比利时安特卫普音乐学院音乐厅共举行了5场“中国曾侯乙编钟音乐会”,演出了由主办方欧洲中国音乐研究“磬”基金会(CHIME)荷兰著名作曲家笛欧·卢万迪为曾侯乙编钟创作的乐曲《曾侯乙》。

From September to October 2005, the HBPM held theSpecial exhibition on Chinese chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zengin the Netherlands and Belgium and staged five chime bell concertsat the Amsterdam Tropentheatre and the concert hall of Antwerp Conservatory in Belgium. The HBPM Chimes Orchestra performed Marquis Yi of Zeng, a composition by Dio Louvaindi, a famous Dutch composer with the European Foundation for Chinese Music Research (CHIME). The CHIME Foundation was also the organiser of the exhibitions.


2007年,谭盾率领编钟乐团携编钟复制件在奥地利萨尔茨堡举办编钟专场音乐会。

In 2007, Tan Dun and the HBPM Chimes Orchestrastaged a special concert with the replicated chime bells in Salzburg, Austria.


2010年上海世博会,湖北省博物馆编钟乐团应邀参加上海世博会城市足迹馆驻馆演出。成为最受中外参观者欢迎的欣赏项目。从上海世博园5月1号开园起,我馆编钟乐团共接待党和国家领导人以及国内外政要、知名人士、重要团队几十批次,参观的国内外观众达5000余万人次,演出场次达2000余场,全体参与演出的演职人员以饱满的热情和精湛的技艺承担了高强度的工作负荷,圆满地完成了世博园的演出任务,受到世博局领导及广大观众的盛赞。

During the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the HBPMChimes Orchestra was invited to perform at the City Footprint Pavilion. The performances were the most popular with Chinese and foreign visitors. Since the opening of the Shanghai World Expo Park on 1 May 2010, the HBPM Chimes Orchestra has received dozens of groups of Party and state leaders, domestic and foreign dignitaries, celebrities and important personages and put on more than 2,000 performances, which attracted over 50 million visitors at home and abroad. All the performersundertook an extremely heavy workload and fulfilled thetasksassigned to them by theShanghai World Expo Park.Their great enthusiasm and superb skills were highly praised by the leaders of the Shanghai World ExpoCoordination Bureauand audiences alike.


2011年,编钟复制件参加在日本东京三得利音乐厅举办的第二十九届东京国际音乐节。在为期一周的音乐节上,我馆编钟乐团在完成开幕式首场演出后,还与著名舞蹈家黄豆豆先生一起为来自世界各地的音乐爱好者献上了多场编钟乐舞的专场演出,受到热烈欢迎。编钟首演结束后,来自美国、英国、德国的音乐界人士纷纷向湖北省博物馆编钟乐团发出邀请意向,希望把古老的编钟推向世界。

In 2011, the replicated chime bells were brought to the 29th Tokyo Music Festival at Suntory Hall in Tokyo. During the one-week music festival, the HBPM Chimes Orchestra not only performed in the opening ceremony, but also presented a number of chime bell music and dance performances together with famous dancer Huang Doudouin front ofa global audience. After the first chime bell performance, manymusic personagesfrom the US, the UK and Germany hoped that the HBPM Chimes Orchestrawould be ableintroducethe ancient chime bells to the world.


2012年11月,湖北省博物馆承办了亚太博协2012年年会。编钟乐团为海内外来宾奉献了一场“编钟乐舞”专场音乐会。亚太博协专场音乐会的惊艳亮相,为博物馆争得了荣誉,受到业界一致好评。

In November 2012, the HBPM hosted the ICOM-ASPAC Assembly. The special chimebellconcertpresented by the Chimes Orchestrastunned the attendees from home and abroad.The performance won a great honour for the HBPMand was highly praised by our peers.


2013年5月16日,由美国驻武汉总领事馆、湖北省博物馆共同举办的“克莱维诺”钢琴三重奏与湖北省博物馆编钟乐团武汉联袂公演在我馆举行。这场穿越时空,跨越国度,中西文化融合的视听盛宴,取得了良好的社会效果。

On 16 May 2013, jointly organised by the HBPM and the US Consulate General in Wuhan,a public performance of the Trio Clavino and the Chimes Orchestra was held at the HBPM.This feast for eyes and ears connected ancient times with the modern age and integrated Chinese and Western cultures,thus achievingfinesocial effect.


2014年6月2号,湖北省编钟乐团与楚天广播电台、台湾邓丽君文教基金会共同举办了“追梦·邓丽君与编钟”专场音乐会,获得一致好评,包括凤凰卫视在内的主流媒体纷纷现场报导。

On 2 June 2014, the HBPM Chimes Orchestra,Chutian Radio Station and the Taiwan Teresa Teng Culture and Education Foundation jointly held a special concert entitled Chasing the dream — Teresa Teng and chime bells.The concert was well received and was covered by mainstream media such asPhoenix Television.


2014年7月,湖北省博物馆编钟乐团与旅加拿大华裔音乐家江革玲女士举办了“钟灵毓秀”编钟与民乐专场公益音乐会。

In July 2014, the HBPMChimes Orchestra andChinese-Canadian musician Geling Jiangjointly staged a specialcharityconcert—Elegant and graceful: chime bells and folk music.


2014年9月,湖北省博物馆编钟乐团与英国著名单簧管爵士乐家、作曲家、音乐剧导演及音乐教育家阿伦·高希联袂公演“异曲同工”音乐会。本次音乐会是英国文化协会和英国艺术家权益保障基金会组织的“2014艺术家在中国”活动的重要组成部分。

In September 2014, the HBPMChimes Orchestra presented a Same tunes, different instrumentsconcert together with Alan Goch,famous British clarinet jazz musician, composer, musical director and music educator. This concert was an important part of the Artists in China2014 initiativelaunched by the British Council and the PRS for Music Foundation.


2015年元旦,为加强文化惠民,进一步提升湖北省博物馆的社会影响力,湖北省博物馆联合湖北省影视新星艺术团,共同举办了“荆风楚韵迎新年——2015元旦公益汇演”活动。古韵十足的演奏和独具特色的乐舞,生动展示了楚人的曼妙舞姿。这场充满荆风楚韵的新年盛宴达到了完美的演出效果。

On New Year's Day of 2015, in order to benefit the public with cultural initiatives and further enhance our social influence, the HBPM and the Hubei Provincial Film and Television New Star Art Troupe jointly launched the Jing-Chu style — 2015 New Year's Day public welfare show. The archaic, unique performance vividly showed the beautiful music and graceful dance of the Chu people and achieved a most perfect result.


2016年,第二十四届国际博物馆协会大会暨博物馆博览会在意大利米兰开幕。“中国馆”创意、设计、布展由湖北省博物馆承担,湖北省博物馆编钟乐团的编钟乐舞惊艳亮相米兰,带给各国观众艺术享受。

In 2016, the 24thGeneral Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and Museums Expo was held in Milan, Italy. In the China Pavilion,which was designed, arranged and decorated by the HBPM,the chime bell music and dance show by the HBPMChimes Orchestra brought the global audience a unique artistic experience.


走过30多年,湖北省博物馆编钟乐团始终保持着青春的活力,演职人员在专业和技艺上不断提高,每天以饱满的热情为到访的海内外游客奉献一台反映先秦时期我国古代音乐文化的视听盛宴,深受广大观众的喜爱,成为博物馆最具文化内涵、艺术欣赏价值和影响力的特色品牌。

Three decades on, the HBPM Chimes Orchestra has always maintained its youthful vitality. Its members have been constantly improving their professional attainmentsand performing skills. Every day, they present domestic and foreign visitors with a feast for both the ears and eyes.Thechime bell music and dance show,which reflects ancient Chinese music culture of the pre-Qin period, is well received by vast audiences and has become the most influential brand of our museum,with the most profound cultural connotations andgreatestvalue for artistic appreciation.
