In a tragic case that has sparked nationwide discussion about public safety in China, a man who deliberately dropped bricks from a 32-story building, killing a 28-year-old female lawyer, has been sentenced to death. The Supreme People's Court of China has approved the death penalty for the perpetrator, with immediate execution ordered.
The incident occurred in June 2023 in Changchun, Jilin Province, when the victim was visiting a local street food market. The perpetrator, surnamed Zhou, born in 2000, deliberately dropped a brick from the 32nd floor, striking the victim in the head and causing fatal injuries.
Court documents revealed that Zhou, who was unemployed and financially dependent on his parents, had developed misanthropic tendencies and a desire to end his own life. Unable to gather the courage to commit suicide, he devised a plan to achieve death through capital punishment by harming others. Over six days, Zhou repeatedly dropped various objects from the high-rise, including water containers, unopened cola cans, and bricks, resulting in one death and one injury among street food patrons below.
The victim's sister later discovered that the building's upper floors contained numerous loose bricks and tiles, with unrestricted access to the rooftop through the emergency stairwell. She also learned that local vendors had previously reported incidents of objects being thrown from the building, but no effective action was taken to prevent such occurrences.
During the trial, psychiatric evaluation confirmed Zhou was mentally competent and fully responsible for his actions. When receiving his death sentence, witnesses reported that Zhou smiled, having achieved his intended outcome. His parents, present at the sentencing, wept but offered no apology to the victim's family.
The victim's family has indicated their intention to pursue legal action against the property management company and other relevant parties for their failure to prevent this tragedy.
