He is Xu Yuanchong, a translator who interprets "poetry and distance" with his whole life. 许渊冲（1921年4月18日-2021年6月17日），男，汉族，江西南昌人。早年毕业于西南联大外文系，1944年考入清华大学研究院外国文学研究所，1983年起任北京大学教授。
从事文学翻译长达六十余年，译作涵盖中、英、法等语种，翻译集中在中国古诗英译，形成韵体译诗的方法与理论，被誉为“诗译英法唯一人”，北京大学教授，翻译家。
Xu Yuanchong (April 18, 1921 -- June 17, 2021), male, Han nationality, born in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. He graduated from the Department of Foreign Literature of Southwest Associated University in 1944 and was admitted to the Institute of Foreign Literature of Tsinghua University in 1983.
He has been engaged in literary translation for more than 60 years, covering Chinese, English, French and other languages, focusing on the translation of ancient Chinese poems into English, forming the method and theory of verse translation, known as "the only person who translates poems into English and French", professor of Peking University, translator.

“三美”
许渊冲先生的翻译技巧，那可真是一绝！他老人家在翻译上可是自成一派，提出了译文应达到“三美”的境界：翻译要看起来整齐、美观，就像一幅画。

翻译要尽可能保持原文的形式美，比如诗歌的行数、节奏、押韵等。许渊冲在翻译时，会尽量保持原文的句式结构和修辞手法，让译文在形式上与原文相似，同时又具有自己的特色。
The translation should maintain the formal beauty of the original as much as possible, such as the number of lines, rhythm, rhyme and so on. 运用同源词语：同源词语是英语修辞里面的一种修辞格，许渊冲在翻译时会巧妙运用这种修辞格，使译文更加地道、自然。
跨行：跨行是英诗的本色与特长，许渊冲在翻译诗歌时，会灵活运用跨行技巧，使译文在形式上更加接近英诗的风格。
形断意连：这是英语语言的一项优势，许渊冲在翻译时会运用这种技法，使译文在表达上更加流畅、连贯。

In Mao Zedong's poem "Inscription for the Women Militia Photograph," there is a line that reads, "不爱红装爱武装" which Xu Yuanchong translated as "To face the powder and not to powder the face."
