LINSEED is pleased to participate in the joint project "Onsen Confidential 2024" in Tokyo. Filled with diverse dynamics, this project brings together art practitioners, artists, and collectors to experience local onsen and share the spirit of the industry while exhibitions take place throughout Tokyo. Promoting an openness to collaboration and cooperation, the program brings together 14 Tokyo galleries which share space with 23 galleries from around the globe to curate a wide range of exhibitions featuring artists from different regions, showcasing the unique context of the contemporary art world of Tokyo. The program opens on April 6 or 7 and runs through April 20 or 21, respectively. (Please see the end of this article for detailed information and schedule of participating galleries).

LINSEED (Shanghai) will be joined by 47 Canal (New York) and STANDARD (Oslo) at XYZ Collective (Tokyo), where we will present small sized paintings and mixed media works by LU Junyi (b.1996, China) and Asami SHOJI (b.1988, Japan). The exhibition will take place at XYZ Collective (2-13-4-B02 Sugamo, Toshima-ku, Tokyo) from April 7 to 21, 2024.

LU Junyi was born in Guangzhou, China, in 1996. She received her BFA degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2018 and her MFA degree from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2023. She currently lives and works in London. Lu’s practice involves diverse materials and media, encompassing paintings, sculptures, and writings. Employing the method of storytelling, her fictional autobiographical projects respond to contemporary living experiences, interweaving memories, folklore, and social science research. Reflecting hauntological themes, the personal symbols in her work carry a sense of collective unsettlement toward a lost future. The seemingly unintentional arrangement of the images and the hazy, unreal color palette give the audience a sense of uncertainty and loneliness, revealing a predicament of wanting to escape; the body trapped in the dwelling contains unspeakable contradictory emotions, expressing the young generation's ongoing confusion and desire for family, intimacy, and consciousness of independence. The conflict between these ever-present and lingering emotions and the longing for a fantasized home leaves one with no choice but to oscillate between reality and imagination.

Her solo exhibition include: “Watch Out, Kiddo”, 2024, LINSEED, Shanghai. Her selected group exhibitions include: “Onsen Confidential”, 2024, LINSEED, Tokyo; “Volatile Futures”, 2023, Unit 1 Gallery, London; “Slide a Glance”, 2023, ASC Gallery, London; “SPIIIIINELESS”, 2022, UCL Art Museum, London; “Era 2022”, 2022, Crypt Gallery, London; “In Our Image, After Our Likeness”, 2021, Gajah Gallery, Yogyakarta. Lu was a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant award in 2022.

Asami SHOJI was born in 1988 in Fukushima, Japan. She obtained her MFA in printmaking from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 2012. She currently lives and works in Tokyo. Shoji’s work envisions lines, the contours of the creatures in her paintings, as a threshold that opens up dimensions characterized by their movements, rather than boundaries segregating the opposites. The spatial experiences conjured by her paintings transcend the static realm, giving birth to a dynamic tableau where sensory perceptions intermingle and flow unrestrictedly. Her work invites the viewer into intricate narratives and sensory explorations, painting not merely a visual image but also imprinting a visceral experience upon the consciousness, offering a multifaceted exploration of the intricacies of existence and perception.

Her selected solo exhibitions include: TBD, 2024, Independent Art Fair with LINSEED, New York(upcoming); “a Gait Without Foot”, 2023, gallery21yo-j, Tokyo; “From Tbilisi with Love”, 2022-23, DECAMERON, Tokyo; “Tomorrow’s Unseen Mythologies”, 2021, gallery21yo-j, Tokyo; “Diagram of the Mud”, 2018, Cale, Tokyo; “During a Night”, 2017, Tokyo Wonder Site, Tokyo. Her selected group exhibitions include: “Onsen Confidential”, 2024, LINSEED, Tokyo; “Mindscapes by Japanese Female Artists“, Curated by Kim Sunhee and Tsubaki Reiko, 2023, Gana Art Center, Seoul; “Gestures of Resistance”, 2023, LINSEED in collaboration with A.I., London; “Yearning for Vision”, 2023, Taro Okamoto Museum of Art (Kanagawa), Ashikaga Museum of Art (Tochigi), Kurume City Art Museum (Fukuoka); “50 seconds”, 2023, soda, Yebisu International Festival For Art & Alternative Visions 2023, Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Tokyo; “Eyes of the wind Vol.1”, 2022, Obscura, Tbilisi; “The Way of Paintings”, 2022, SOMPO Museum, Tokyo; “Tokyo Wonder Wall 2015”, 2015, Tokyo Modern Art Museum, Tokyo; “The 18th Taro Okamoto Memorial Award for Contemporary Art”, 2015, Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kanagawa.
