He has been awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) and MND Medallion for service and contributions to the HDB Civil & Structural Engineering Advisory Panel. He is a member of the 17th Singapore Building Structure and Substructure Standards Committee and serves as the Chairman of Appeals Advisory Board for Infrastructure Protection Act. He has supervised over 50 PhD students to date, several of whom have received the Best PhD Thesis Award and other academic honors.

报告简介

A building that does not meet robustness requirements is at higher risk of progressive collapse in the event of a column removal, whether it is caused by accidents or terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, such scenarios have become more common in recent decades, which could lead to significant economic impact and tremendous casualties. As a result, there has been worldwide attention given to understand the structural mechanisms to prevent progressive collapse, with the aim of developing appropriate design and assessment frameworks. Hence, this seminar introduces a review of a systematic approach to evaluate the performance of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in preventing progressive collapse. The approach includes investigating the load-resisting mechanisms in 2D and 3D RC sub-structures through experimental studies and identifying special design considerations that can activate these mechanisms. It also involves simulating the resistance mechanisms of RC sub-structures under both quasi-static and free-fall loading conditions and converting quasi-static resistance to pseudo-dynamic resistance. Additionally, the resistance mechanisms of RC structures under contact detonation conditions are explored. Finally, the research findings will be used to create a design guide that can be used to mitigate the risk of progressive collapse.
