Origins and Legends

(Legend of Zhao Gongming)

Zhao Gongming is one of the most widely recognized Gods of Wealth, believed to be a Taoist from the Warring States period. He was canonized as the God of Wealth because he was generous and helped people during his life. After his death, he was revered as a deity who protects wealth and brings prosperity.

 (Legend of Bi Gan)

Bi Gan was a loyal minister of the Shang Dynasty, known for his integrity and generosity. It is said that he was executed for his righteousness. In memory of his virtues, he was revered as a God of Wealth, symbolizing that the acquisition of wealth should be based on integrity and morality.

 (Legend of Zhang Sanfeng)

Zhang Sanfeng, a Taoist and one of the founders of Tai Chi during the Ming Dynasty, is considered a God of Wealth in some regions. This is because he was not only skilled inmartial arts but also proficientininternal alchemy, symbolizing the attainment of wealth through inner cultivation and wisdom.

(The Multifaceted Nature of the God of Wealth)

The God of Wealth in China is not a single deity but includes multiple gods responsible for different aspects of wealth and prosperity. These legends reflect the multidimensionality of wealth in Chinese culture, as well as the various ways to acquire it.

Celebratory Customs

(Customs in the South)

In the South of China, the activities for welcoming the God of Wealth are often more grandiose and lively. The people in the South generally believe that the fifth day of the first lunar month is the birthday of the God of Wealth, so on this day, there are large-scale celebrations.

They place offerings in front of their homes or shops, such as sweets, fruits, and whole fish, symbolizing sweetness and abundance. Firecrackers are also set off to drive away evil spirits and welcome the arrival of the God of Wealth.

Moreover, some areas hold parades for the God of Wealth, where residents, dressed in festive attire, follow someone dressed as the God of Wealth through the streets to pray for financial luck and good fortune.

(Customs in the North)

In contrast, the customs of welcoming the God of Wealth in the North of China are more reserved and family-oriented. On the fifth day of the first lunar month, families in the North conduct worship ceremonies for the God of Wealth, but these are usually on a smaller scale and focus more on family participation.

Northern families place offerings in front of the God of Wealth's statue in their homes, including grains, fruits, and candies, praying for a prosperous and successful new year.

In some areas, it is also customary to light red candles in front of the statue of the God of Wealth, symbolizing the illumination of the path to wealth and bringing good luck.

Although the customs of welcoming the God of Wealth differ between the South and the North of China, both reflect the pursuit of wealth and good fortune. Whether it's the lively celebrations in the South or the family rituals in the North, these customs are imbued with profound cultural significance and people's aspirations for a better life.

These differences showcase the diversity of Chinese culture and the uniqueness of regional cultures, adding more color to China's traditional festivals.
