Earlier this year, the "Neo-Chinese Style" trend took the spotlight, capturing widespread attention. This wave of traditional Chinese aesthetics has not only made its way into the specialized markets of China Textile City but also into smaller local boutiques. At the "Linglong Qipao" shop in the China Textile City Apparel Market, a variety of Neo-Chinese style clothing is on display, designed for occasions such as wedding banquets, school admission celebrations, and business openings.
Since November, Keqiao has been bustling with wedding celebrations. While brides aim to look their best, mothers are equally keen to shine. The shop’s most eye-catching displays feature an array of red qipaos featuring intricate designs and auspicious motifs. Many are handcrafted and take about five days to complete, as each piece is custom-made.
"Look at this qipao. These flowers are all handmade and symbolize prosperity," said shop owner Pan Jisheng. "They may look simple, but they're incredibly intricate to make. Even a skilled artisan working at full speed would need at least two days to complete them."
Pan told the reporter that he has been making qipaos for over 30 years. While the styles have remained largely consistent, the materials have seen significant upgrades. In the past, fabrics like synthetic cotton were commonly used, but now there is a growing trend towards higher-quality materials such as silk, watered gauze, and satin.
In recent years, with the rise of Guochao (China Chic), qipaos—whose '旗' (qí) character symbolizes both the traditional Chinese dress and the auspicious meaning of a "victorious start" (旗开得胜, qí kāi dé shèng)—have become increasingly popular among consumers. "It's not just for weddings," Pan explained. "Many customers buy qipaos for special occasions like business openings or the Gaokao (National College Entrance Examination). This year, quite a few teachers came in to buy them for the Gaokao season."
Qipaos for special occasions typically come in red and green. For everyday wear, however, the colors and patterns are much more diverse, with options like rich browns, soft blues, and fresh pinks. The designs are equally varied, featuring everything from auspicious cloud patterns to checks and florals, catering to all kinds of preferences.
