专访WAF创始人，“行业韧性，蓄力未来！”【环球观筑】

世界建筑节（World Architecture Festival，简称WAF）创始于2008年英国伦敦，是享誉全球并受到广泛关注和尊敬的行业盛会。WAF每年在不同的城市举办，将世界各地的设计师们集聚一堂，被誉为建筑界的奥斯卡。

“世界建筑节 中国”是世界建筑节在中国大陆和港澳台地区独家授权与WAF平行的活动。

CHAPTER 01

“行业韧性”

行业在困境中得到突破

 环球观筑: Paul，你好~非常荣幸能采访到您。第一次中国的现场评审，请问您感受如何？

ACHIFOCUS: Hello Paul~ It's a great honor to interview you. The WAF had been taking China in a live competition. So how do you feel here?

 PAUL FINCH：我们非常高兴这个活动在中国举行，因为我们一直在努力实现它。我们在Covid 19流行之前首先开始计划一项活动，当我们正在制定计划时，突然它被打断了。我们感觉有点无奈，但是我们此刻终于开始做现场活动了，这真是太好了。我们只做了两年的在线评审，当然，现在让大家聚在一起直播的形式明显要好很多。

PAUL FINCH：Well, we're very pleased that this event is happening in China because we've been trying for a long time, to make it happen. And we first started planning an event before the Covid pandemic. So we were making our plans, then it was interrupted. So it's really good that we finally are doing the live event. We did two years of online judging only, but of course it's much better to get everybody together live.

CHAPTER 02

“衷心伊始 

 为建筑而生”

 环球观筑:  世界建筑节已成功举办16届，您最早的初衷和现在有什么变化？

ACHIFOCUS: There are 16 festivals that had been hold about WAF. So I'd like to know the original opinion that you have about WAF and the changes through these 16 events and your future plan you want WAF to be.

 PAUL FINCH：我们从 2008 年开始举办世界建筑节。公司是一家大型媒体公司，我们出版建筑杂志其中之一的《建筑评论》是一本国际杂志。我身为杂志的编辑一直在想，为什么有这么多为房地产人举办的国际活动？在那里你可以看到建筑师，但建筑师本身的大型全球活动又在哪里？所以我们做了研究，询问我们的读者是否对这样的节日感兴趣。然而我们得到的声音也是热烈肯定的。

PAUL FINCH：We began World Architecture Festival in 2008. And our company is a big media company and we publish architectural magazines. And one of them, the architectural review is an international magazine. And I was the editor of the magazine. And we all always thought, why are there so many international events for real estate people where you see architects, but where is the big global event for architects themselves? So we did our research, we ask our readers if they would be interested in such a festival. The answer was very positive.

CHAPTER 03

“国际化”

优秀的建筑师及设计值得被世界看到

 环球观筑: WAF最让您感到自豪的成就是什么？对于世界建筑节的未来是如何展望的呢？

ACHIFOCUS: What are you most proud of at WAF? What is the future of the World Architecture Festival?

 PAUL FINCH：我们感到非常荣幸的是，在首次举办活动时，在全球范围内，我们收到了 接近 1,000 个参赛作品。最终我们入围了大约一半的参赛作品。与中国的建筑师一样，必须在国际建筑节当日的评审代表以及观众面前进行现场展示。这真的是世界建筑节的核心。

我认为这永远不会改变，因为这是一个很好的形式，并且它非常友好且快速，这是建筑节代表看到优秀建筑师展示优秀作品的机会。所以我们认为这种情况会继续下去。

PAUL FINCH：We are very honored that at the time of our first event, we received close to 1,000 entries worldwide. In the end, we were shortlisted for about half of the entries. Like architects in China, they had to present live in front of the jury and the audience on the day of the festival. This is really the heart of the World Architecture Festival.

I think that's never going to change because it's a good form, and it's very friendly and fast, and it's an opportunity for the festival delegates to see great architects present their great work. So we think that's going to continue.

So we made our plan that it took us about two years to organize the first festival, and the idea was that all architects in the world could enter their projects for awards. Nobody had to select them. Nobody had to choose them. It was up to them. If they wanted to enter, they could enter and they would be judged live if they were short distance. And that really was the basis for World Architecture Festival. And it's still the same today.

Of course, the geography in which WAF is held is changing. Our global outlook has grown stronger since 2,008, so we spent four years in Europe, with some time moving to Singapore and back to Europe. Yes, we are currently in Singapore again. But of course, coming to China is also a great reward, especially because the support of Chinese architects has given WAF a lot of strength, especially in the past 5 to 10 years, WAF has generated many awards from China.

CHAPTER 04

“评审公平”

WAF评选全过程做到公开公正

 环球观筑: 迄今为止，WAF在筛选项目的过程中，是如何确保评审项目的原则与公平性呢？

ACHIFOCUS: So far, how has WAF ensured the principles and fairness of the evaluation process in the process of selecting projects?

 PAUL HYETT：WAF本身规定的机制会确保整个评选过程的公平性，无论是从选择评委，还是各个作品类型奖项的评选流程，我们都会做到全方面的公正公开。

建筑也是一个辩论，不同的人看待建筑，会有不同的观点，可以各抒己见。但是，个性中会存在一定的共性，真正好的建筑，也会得到大家一致的认同，大体量的建筑会有复杂性，那小的建筑也会有宝石一般的存在。

PAUL HYETT：The mechanism set by WAF itself will ensure the fairness of the entire selection process, whether it is from the selection of judges to the selection process of each type of award, we will achieve fairness and openness in all aspects. 

Architecture is also a debate, different people look at architecture, there will be different views, can express their own opinions, but there will be a certain commonality in the personality, really good architecture, will also be unanimously recognized by everyone, large buildings will have complexity, that small buildings will also have the existence of gems.

CHAPTER 05

“蓄力未来”

未来的建筑力量定会持续向上

 环球观筑: 在存量经济时期，WAF China如何来引领行业?如何鼓励未来年轻建筑师力量呢？

ACHIFOCUS: Hello Paul~ It's a great honor to interview you. The WAF had been taking China in a live competition. So how do you feel here?

 PAUL HYETT：目前行业经济萧条可以将其看作可以正常面对的事情。建筑行业现在有太多的细分领域，可能现在的状况影响最大的是商业建筑领域。我目前已经从事建筑领域工作已经45年了，在英国经过两次行业低谷，但现在依旧在建筑行业里发挥力量。

如果觉得在行业里目前感觉迷茫的话，我觉得可以从以下3个方面来为未来积蓄力量，拓宽行业发展事业；第一个是教育，第二个是展览，第三个是跨界交流，突破我们的行业圈层，去转换新的设计思维等。

PAUL HYETT：The current economic depression in the industry can be seen as something that can be faced normally. There are too many segments of the construction industry right now, and perhaps the most impactful of the current situation is in the commercial construction sector. I've been working in construction for 45 years now, and I've been through two downturns in the United Kingdom, but I'm still doing my best.

If you feel confused in the industry, I think you can accumulate strength for the future and broaden the development of the industry from the following three aspects; The first is education, the second is exhibition, and the third is cross-border exchange, breaking through our industry circle, to transform new design thinking, etc.

 PAUL FINCH：对于后辈的这样的一些年轻人的话，给他们的建议首先是一定要让他们的观念保持更新，因为建筑行业的话它相对来说更新的比较快。其次，他们也要保持一定的耐心，因为一个好的建筑，一个好的设计，你要把它完成的话也是需要一定的时间的。那第三就是一定要有韧性，因为经济情况的话它时好时坏，而且它们会承受很多来自可能客户、政府或者就建筑本身的这种压力。所以说希望他们能有这几个方面的这种秉性，可以帮助他们走得更远，走得更好。

CHAPTER 06

“酒庄体验”

酒庄场域让国际看到更丰富美好的中国

 环球观筑: 郎酒庄园举办的这次活动，您关于建筑，环境，品酒，您的体验是什么？

ACHIFOCUS: What was your experience with the architecture, the environment, and the wine tasting at Lang Wine Estate?

 PAUL FINCH: 自2008 年以来，中国建筑的质量有了很大的提高。我今天早上评判的项目，我们发现了四座优秀的建筑，包括已建成的建筑组合、一个未来的项目、一些城市设计。所以这是非常令人鼓舞的。

我认为世界建筑节最棒的地方，包括中国也是如此，是工作的质量，以及建筑师有机会看到他们所想看的的东西，正在设计什么，都会被展示出来。

所以我认为这次活动非常好，我们很幸运能来到贵州郎酒庄园，这是一个最壮观、最出乎意料的地点和场地。当然，我们还有一场非常精彩的灯光秀。所以对于WAFC开幕典礼，这里举办了一场精彩的宴会，有20 种不同的中国菜。对于国际评委来说，这真的是一次非常令人兴奋的经历。

PAUL FINCH：Since 2008, the quality of Chinese architecture has improved considerably. The projects I judged this morning and we found four excellent buildings, including a portfolio of completed buildings, a future project, and some urban design. So that's very encouraging.

I think the best thing about the World Architecture Festival, including China as well, is the quality of the work and the opportunity for architects to see what they want to see, what they're designing, is shown.

So I think the event was very good and we were lucky to be at Guizhou Langjiu Estate, which is one of the most spectacular and unexpected locations and venues. And, of course, we also have a very good light show. So for the WAFC opening ceremony, there was a wonderful banquet with 20 different Chinese dishes. It was really a very exciting experience for the international judges.
