SHBJJ 20th year anniversary Speech
Many of you joined SHBJJ over the last 10 years, most of you during the last few years. So it makes sense that to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of SHBJJ, I tell you a bit about the story of the first BJJ school in Shanghai.
For myself, I joined SHBJJ in 2007, after a bit less than 1 year training with a group of Japanese in a local dojo on Maoming road. For a while, there was only 1 class per week on the weekend.
And so, a guy I was training with at that time told me about that other school, a Gracie Barra gym.
I went to check it out because they had classes about everyday, they had a black belt and many students already training there.
The main co-founder of SHBJJ, my teacher Stanley TAM, was still a blue belt at that time.
This was early 2000’s and jiujitsu really just started in China. There wasn’t many places to train, let alone good places with good teachers.
I felt in love with the school after my very first class and never looked away since then.
So, that’s my journey in a nutshell…
About SHBJJ, it has changed a lot since then…
- We were a bit more of an MMA gym at that time (I trained MMA for a few years at the beginning, even had a fight in Thailand. But with time, it slowly transitioned more and more into a gi-BJJ school).
- We’ve changed locations 6 times since then (started in Tianzi fang, then Dapu lu, Jumen lu, Shanxi lu, Lingling lu and now…)
I counted and from the TianZiFang days (our first location), 3 guys are still here: Jamison who teaches at CA, LiuFeng who teaches at Panda (Putuo) and myself.
- It used to be 80% foreigners / 20% chinese, now it’s more like 95% Chinese / 5% foreigners
The landscape of BJJ in China or at least in Shanghai changed a lot as well:
- I first competed in China when I was a blue belt, before that as far as I know, there was no competition. We had to go overseas to compete (I first competed in Japan as a white-belt, my teammates also competed in HK, Taiwan, Philippines…)
- Many schools opened during those years, almost of them by ex-SHBJJ students (all the schools that I know in Shanghai were opened by people I once trained with at SHBJJ).
If we are all here today, 20 years after the start of SHBJJ, it is of course because of people.
There are many many people to thank for that, many people came through the school and left a mark, because of their skills, because of their financial contribution, because of their personality…
To mention them all would not be possible, so I shrunk down the list to 3 people:
- Stanley TAM: the main co-founder of SHBJJ. My teacher. A passionate martial artist who managed to get fired by Disney and used the money he received as a compensation to grow the school (this is when we moved from TianZiFang - a space we shared with a dancing studio) to Dapu road (where it was our own space)
- Tony EDUARDO: also co-founder of SHBJJ. The only black-belt in town for a very long time, and a high-level black belt per se. At a time where online learning was not a thing yet, he was showing us what true beautiful BJJ was like.
- And Chen Yi: Chen Yi showed up in the SHBJJ story when we moved to Jumen lu. This was around 2010. He was selling tea at that time, in the same building as the school. He came and started to train with us. Not long after, he partnered up with Stan and helped in the promotion of SHBJJ and them of BJJ in China as a whole. GCJJF is a product of his for example. He may not train that much… but without him, the brand SHBJJ maybe wouldn’t have survived for 20 years
To finish, about philosophies that the founders of SHBJJ shared with us:
1- No matter why you started BJJ, whether it was to do a sport or to learn to fight, remember that BJJ is before anything else a martial art.
And that the foundations of Martial Arts are respect, self-discipline, loyalty.
In a world that is ever changing through technology and getting away from old traditions, practicing a strong Martial Art like BJJ is a great way to keep those important values alive
2- Even though on the surface, it feels like the importance is to win, keep in mind that we all have our own journeys, and that what really matters isn’t who’s the best today, who is better than you or who you are better than.
What really is the most important is that you keep training and keep showing up. Until you are an old man or old woman, just keep practicing jiujitsu. Do not quit. Do not stop.
Thank you very much!

- Stanley TAM:SHBJJ
