The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world’s complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.
Position 1
This Postdoctoral Associate position will work with Dr. Yun Yang on very-fine scale evapotranspiration modeling by combining satellite and UAV data with machine learning and AI. This individual will be responsible for processing data from Planet, Landsat and Sentinel satellites and collecting and processing UAV observations. And using these processed data to model very-fine spatial resolution evapotranspiration data using methods including machine learning, AI and two source energy balance-based evapotranspiration models.
A Ph.D. in remote sensing, geography, environmental science, engineering and computer science. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to write, publish, and present research effectively. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in using deep learning and AI on remotely sensed data and programing skills in Python, C, Matlab or R.
Position 2
This position will work with Dr. Yun Yang on studying the connection between soil health and plant water use from field to global scales. This individual will be responsible for collecting and analyzing soil health and plant water use data at field to global scales to explore how soil health influences plant water use and how different agriculture practices impact this relationship.
We are seeking applicants with a Ph.D. in soil science, hydrology, agricultural engineering and environmental science/engineering. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to write, publish, and present research effectively. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in soil and hydrology mechanisms, experience in analyzing big data at global scale and a strong publication record.
