Hey everyone, welcome back to Yapping with Michael. Today, I'm gonna be talking to you all about some tips on time management.
So, why am I talking about this? Well, to start off, I have to say I've had my fair share of good and bad time management. And although mine isn't perfect right now, I feel as if it's improved a lot from back towards the end of 2021—my time management.
As for why I'm talking about this, it's because I feel like time management helps you a lot with dealing with stress from school work, other work stuff you have to do, and it's just a pretty good thing to have if you want any sort of free time whatsoever.
So, let's get into the tips.
First tip, starting off: You need to remove all distractions. Now, I know this is kind of like a focus tip, but without focus, you can't do the rest of the parts of time management right. If you're not focused, you're not exactly working on what you're supposed to be working on. You get sidetracked, and when you get sidetracked, your efficiency goes down.
The main point of time management is to keep your efficiency up and to try and finish things in the least amount of time possible so you have time to work on other things. This is why you need to remove all distractions, such as electronics, toys, maybe even most snacks if you can. But, like, I understand sometimes it's nice to have a work-time snack when you're doing homework and stuff, so maybe leave that. But electronics, especially phones and computers, when you're not supposed to be on them, move them maybe out of the room.
That part is kind of where I'm still working on, like making it better, because sometimes I'll have my phone right here and I just listen to music maybe. So yeah, I'm still working on that, but it's just a very good starting tip to remove all distractions so you're more focused.
Now, second, this is a very important one: You need to make a schedule. What I mean by that is not like putting specific things in specific time periods. It's very hard to follow a specific timeline if you're not at school. So what you want to do is list out all the things you need to do today and make an approximate time for each task.
Then, list them by priority and make sure to leave slots for the things that have to be done during that time period, like classes, for example. Then, list out the priorities and make sure you remember what has to be due tonight, for example, and what's due tomorrow—maybe do that a little later today. So make sure you finish your priorities first, and then just remember to do the rest of the things.
Now, let's talk about time chunks. During big time chunks, make sure to take breaks. If you take breaks, your brain gets to rest every once in a while so you can focus better in your next time slot. For example, you work for an hour, let's say you take a 15-minute break, and then you work for another hour. That's better time management and you get more efficiency.
You get more work done in those two time chunks than if you didn't take the break in between and worked for two and a half hours straight. Because that way, you're not as tired, you've had your break, and you've gotten the chance to freshen up again. It'll be like restarting, and then you'll just be picking up from where you left off, so you'll be very efficient moving forward as well.
So that's just something to keep in mind—maybe try to take breaks every once in a while when you're doing big time chunks, for example.
And as for our final tip, which is really important: You have to learn to use up small chunks of your day. For example, if you have 10 minutes before class, like I said, you made a schedule earlier and rolled out approximately how long each task takes. You can check it and see, "Oh, this only takes around 10 minutes. Maybe I should do that now." Or, "I could arrive at class 10 minutes earlier and finish that, so I don't have to work on it later." Or, when my parents are calling me to go to dinner, and I have a big project that I have to finish, maybe I should start on something that only takes 5 minutes of reading before dinner. That way, I don't have to worry about it afterward when I have to work on that big project.
So, time management is not only about managing your time well through a schedule, but also about making sure that you use up little pieces of your day. Try and finish up the smaller things and save the big things that take more time for later. And you don't necessarily have to leave the big things for later. You can work on as much of it as you can during little time slots if you feel like nothing else would fit that time slot better. That would also release some of the stress that you would have to deal with later.
So just summing up the tips: Remove all distractions, make a schedule, use up small pieces and fragments of your day, and remember to take breaks during big chunks of time. Those four tips, I think—apart from the first one, because I'm still working on that one—but the other three really can help. Especially, you know, I recite some long pieces of text or something, so sometimes I'll just use little fragments of time to review what I've already recited before so I don't forget. And the effects I've seen for myself are that I end up with way more free time now because I'm focused on one chunk of time doing what I need to do, like homework, for example. And I have more free time to hang out with friends, watch YouTube, do all that sort of stuff.
So I think time management is a very important skill to have, especially in high school and college when things start to get a little messy, and you might have to stay up late all the way until like 2:00 am if you don't have good time management doing your homework. So yeah, that's just something I think everyone should keep in mind.
So, let me know what you think. Well, that's it for today. The end. Bye.
