Are you leaving Beijing this year? You’re not alone. It’s January, which means many in the expat community are looking at their 2025 calendar and realizing that relocation is in the cards.

June is the peak season for relocation, as the school year ends, both school personnel and families with children are looking to relocate.

So how far in advance should you plan? It’s never really too early. When it comes to international moving, starting at least 2 months prior to your actual move can make a world of difference.

About 2 Months Prior to Move

Sort Your Belongings
We all accumulate stuff over time and there could be more things you have that you may no longer need. Decide what you want to sell, donate, discard, and take.

Sell or Donate Items
The more you declutter, the less you'll need to pack. There are plenty of WeChat groups and organizations in Beijing where you can sell and donate things you're not taking with you.

Get Quotes from Moving Companies
Contact several different companies to get quotes for your move.

Create a List of Expenses
These can include the cost of hiring a moving company and purchasing new appliances and furniture for your new home.

1 Month Prior to Move

  • Arrange for the cut-off of your utilities and services at your current home and activation at your new home.

  • Notify necessary parties of your change of address

  • Schedule time to see friends and family before your move.

Once You Have a Moving Date and Address

  • Request time off work and set up childcare for your moving date.

  • Request to book moving elevator and reserve parking for moving truck if needed.

  • Request transcripts from your kid's current school to be sent to their new school.
