How well do you know international schools in Beijing?
Just
before Chinese New Year, we launched the first of a series of flash
quizzes on Beijing’s international school scene. Later this week, we
will launch the second of our quizzes, but for now, let’s see how we
collectively did on Round 1.
First off, as of this writing there
has been 226 votes cast, with 128 people (57%) having kids between 0 and
18 years old. Given the poll was circulated via Jingkids, a good chunk of the remaining 43% are likely connected to schools somehow, either as teachers or administrators.
Here’s a snapshot of
the child situation of respondents: (numbers add up to greater than
100% because some people have kids in more than one age bracket)
Expecting: 1%
0-3 years old: 16%
3-6 years old: 12%
6-9 years old: 15%
9-12 years old: 14%
12-15 years old: 10%
15-18 years old: 8%
No children between 0 and 18: 43%
Three schools on
this list essentially tied at the top of the charts, with over 90% name
recognition: ISB, WAB and Dulwich. Keystone and Harrow were not far
behind in the 80s, with BIBA at 78% and HD School at 42%.
Have you heard of this school? (check all that apply)
ISB: 92%
WAB: 92%
Dulwich: 91%
Keystone: 88%
Harrow: 85%
BIBA: 78%
HD School: 42%
None of the above: 2%
Next up: does the school offer the British curriculum? This question proved to be a little difficult to explain because many schools use hybrid curriculums. Harrow offers only the British curriculum, while Dulwich is mostly the British curriculum but also offers some IB programs in the upper years. HD School and BIBA both offer some of the British curriculum in later years, while the remainder of the schools do not use the British curriculum at all.
Does the school offer the British curriculum? (check all that apply)
*Dulwich 77%
*Harrow 75%
*BIBA 15%
Keystone 12%
ISB 9%
*HD School 8%
WAB 6%
Which school is
celebrating its 30th anniversary? The correct answer is WAB, and 45% of
you were correct. However, answers are all over the place here, with 55%
naming other schools, including 1 in 4 naming ISB as having its 30th
birthday this year.
Which is celebrating 30th anniversary this year?
*WAB: 45%
ISB: 25%
Dulwich: 15%
Harrow: 5%
BIBA: 4%
Keystone: 4%
HD School: 2%
As many know, China
sets rules on which schools are allowed to accept both foreign passport
holders and local citizens. However, poll results indicate a lot of
confusion on this issue. From this list, only three -- Dulwich, WAB and
ISB -- are restricted to foreign passport holders only. All the rest are
licensed to accept both. Harrow is a bit of a trick question, as
technically they have two schools, one licensed for foreigners and one
to accept both, though both are on the same campus.
Is this school allowed to accept both PRC citizens and foreign passport holders? (Asterisk indicates the school can admit both)
*Keystone: 70%
*BIBA 68%
*HD School 60%
*Harrow 52%
Dulwich 22%
ISB 14%
WAB 12%
The results of this
question also indicate a lot of confusion amongst which schools offer a
fully bilingual program. Sticklers will point out that some of these
schools have partial bilingual programs in certain years - for
instance, ISB offers a dual language program in some elementary years,
and WAB has a German language track via its Swiss School - but neither
school is fully bilingual. The only three that offer full bilingual
immersion are BIBA, Keystone and HD School, but judging by the poll
results, this is by no means common knowledge.
Does this school offer a full immersion bilingual program?
*BIBA: 60%
*Keystone: 56%
*HD School: 43%
ISB: 29%
Harrow: 28%
Dulwich: 18%
WAB: 15%
Founded in 1980, ISB is the oldest school on this list (though only 61% of respondents know
this). HD School, which was founded in 2017, is the youngest (yet only
46% of respondents know this).
Which of these schools is the oldest?
*ISB: 61%
WAB: 21%
Dulwich: 7%
Harrow: 7%
Keystone: 3%
BIBA: 1%
HD School: 0%
Which of these schools is the newest?
*HD School: 46%
Keystone: 19%
BIBA: 11%
Harrow: 4%
Dulwich: 2%
ISB: 1%
WAB: 1%
This one was tricky,
but the 34% of you who are true insiders know the leopard is the mascot
of BIBA. WAB, which was named by 21% of respondents, has the tiger as
its mascot.
Which school uses the Leopard as its mascot?
*BIBA: 34%
WAB: 21%
Harrow: 12%
Dulwich: 10%
Keystone: 10%
ISB: 8%
HD School: 6%
This one was also
tricky, as many automatically assume Shunyi is the home to most
international schools. In reality, HD School, WAB and Harrow are all in
Chaoyang District (while the remainder of the list are in Shunyi).
Which of these schools are not in Shunyi? (Asterisk indicates school is in another district)
*HD School 56%
*WAB 49%
*Harrow 46%
BIBA 21%
Keystone 12%
Dulwich 8%
ISB 5%
