Frederick Childe Hassam

The most famous Impressionist painter in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he was influenced by French Impressionist artists while in Paris and is known for his urban street scenes and New England landscapes, characterized by warm, bright colors.

Hassam was born in 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and his mother was a descendant of Nathaniel Hawthorne.

His family's hardware store, which was run by his parents, was destroyed by fire when he was young, and he later got a job at a Boston publisher while studying painting at the Howe Institute and the Boston Art Club in his spare time.

Hassam's works have strong impressionist tones. He boldly borrowed the color separation techniques from French impressionism and deeply studied the changing light and color in the vivid scenes under the sun, while maintaining the American local characteristics. He was skilled at depicting the natural beauty of New England and the long, narrow streets and rundown alleys shrouded in rain, fog, snow, or the twilight, which gave people a natural and fresh, light and sweet feeling.
